يجيب هذا الكتاب عن جمعٍ من الأسئلة شغلت الأدب المقارن منذ نشأته الأولى، مثل: ما الأدب المقارن؟ وما الأسس التي بني عليها؟ وما الممارسات التي تميزه؟ ومن هم أشهر أعلامه؟ وكيف تطور عبر القرون؟ وما المستقبل الذي ينتظره؟ وعبر تطوافنا بصفحاته، سنتعرف إلى ما أحدثه مصطلح «الأدب العالمي» من ثورة، وكيف أسهمت الحملات الاستعمارية -رغم شرورها- في إثراء حركة المقارنة بين اللغات والآداب، فضلاً عن الأثر الإيجابي الذي خلَّفه اكتشاف ألواح من القرن الخامس والعشرين قبل الميلاد تروي حكاية الطوفان على هذا الحقل. وسنقف -في الكتاب- على الطرائق التي تعاطى بها الأدب المقارن مع نظرية الأدب، وما جرى عليه من تطورات أسهمت في نقض «المركزية الأوروبية»، وإحلال أشكال جديدة من المقارنات، تُعنى بثقافات الأطراف، التي هُمشت لفترات طويلة. إن هذا الكتاب يضع الأدب المقارن في قلب الممارسة النقدية، ولا يرى مؤلِّفُه فارقاً بيِّناً بين المقارنة والقراءة.
