La metamorfosis o La transformación (Die Verwandlung, en su título original en alemán) es una novela corta escrita por Franz Kafka en 1915. La historia trata sobre Gregorio Samsa, cuya repentina transformación en un enorme insecto dificulta cada vez más la comunicación de su entorno social con él. Con un volumen de unas 70 páginas impresas, es el más largo de los relatos que Kafka terminó y publicó durante su vida.

El corazón delator (en inglés original The Tell-Tale Heart) es un cuento del escritor estadounidense Edgar Allan Poe clasificado en la narrativa gótica. La historia presenta a un narrador anónimo obsesionado con el ojo enfermo (que llama "ojo de buitre") de un anciano con el cual convive. El corazón delator es considerado generalmente un clásico de la literatura gótica, y una de las obras más importantes de su autor. Ha sido adaptado o servido de inspiración en numerosas ocasiones y en distintos medios.

Berenice es un cuento de terror del escritor estadounidense Edgar Allan Poe. Fue publicado por primera vez en el periódico Southern Literary Messenger, en el año 1835. Ante su sadismo espeluznante, los lectores contemporáneos se manifestaron horrorizados con la historia y expusieron sus quejas al director del Messenger. La cita que encabeza el relato, en latín, puede traducirse: «Decíanme los amigos que encontraría algún alivio a mi dolor visitando la tumba de la amada».

El Guardavía (The Signal-Man) es un relato de terror escrito por Charles Dickens y publicado en diciembre de 1866. El relato mezcla terror y elegancia y demuestra que pueden ir de la mano. Lawrence is at his best in this story, taken from the scenes of his childhood and based on characters he knew intimately. The main themes of the story are the class system that dominated society at the time and the pressures put on the young lovers who have to overcome it, and the position of women in society who have nothing to offer but their bodies. For the sake of security and position, one daughter makes a loveless marriage whilst the other daughter gives all that up for love.

A House to Let is a short story originally published in 1858 in the Christmas edition of Dickens' Household Words magazine. The plot concerns an elderly woman, Sophonisba, who notices signs of life in a supposedly empty dilapidated house (the eponymous "House to Let") opposite her own, and employs the efforts of an elderly admirer, Jabez Jarber, and her servant, Trottle, to discover what is happening within.
