Lawrence is at his best in this story, taken from the scenes of his childhood and based on characters he knew intimately. The main themes of the story are the class system that dominated society at the time and the pressures put on the young lovers who have to overcome it, and the position of women in society who have nothing to offer but their bodies. For the sake of security and position, one daughter makes a loveless marriage whilst the other daughter gives all that up for love.

A House to Let is a short story originally published in 1858 in the Christmas edition of Dickens' Household Words magazine. The plot concerns an elderly woman, Sophonisba, who notices signs of life in a supposedly empty dilapidated house (the eponymous "House to Let") opposite her own, and employs the efforts of an elderly admirer, Jabez Jarber, and her servant, Trottle, to discover what is happening within.

Fragmented into 16 excerpts, stories, or scenes, this brief work by León focuses on the breakup of a couple of unnamed lovers without explicit gender, swept away by the gale of passion and desire, with the moon as their sole spectator and accomplice, and the presence of a cat that serves as witness to the impulses of a love that is hopelessly undone in the misunderstanding of bodies scorched by the fire of the sexes. The work is a heartbroken cry of a lonely, proud individual, overpowered by his own ego in the face of the loss and abandonment of the one who filled his days.
