Deux jeunes seigneurs parisiens, La Grange et Du Croisy, quittent fort mécontents la demeure de Gorgibus, riche bourgeois de province arrivé récemment à Paris pour marier sa fille Magdelon et sa nièce Cathos. Les deux amants n'ont pas été jugés suffisamment à la mode par les deux jeunes filles.

Fille de Minos et de Pasiphaé, Phèdre lutte en vain contre la passion qu'elle éprouve pour Hippolyte, le fils de Thésée dont elle est l'épouse.

En l'absence de leurs pères partis en voyage, Octave, fils d’Argante ainsi que Léandre, fils de Géronte, se sont épris l'un de Hyacinte, jeune fille pauvre et de naissance inconnue qu'il vient d'épouser, le second de la "jeune Égyptienne" Zerbinette.

Arnolphe prétend qu'une femme ne peut être sage et vertueuse qu'autant qu'elle est ignorante et niaise. Aussi, pour avoir une épouse à sa guise, il fait élever sa jeune pupille, Agnès, au fond de sa maison, sous la garde d'un valet et d'une servante aussi niais qu'elle.

La pièce raconte l'histoire d'une famille, où la mère, la belle-sœur de cette dernière et une de ses deux filles sont sous l'emprise d'un faux savant.

Nemmeno il successivo appannarsi del prestigio di Ovidio ha mai esaurito la lista dei riverberi letterari delle Metamorfosi, fino a ieri – probabilmente fino a domani.
