But before their music - and the messages behind it - gained understanding and a place in the mainstream, how did the queer musicians of yesteryear fight to build foundations for those who would follow them?

In January of 2015, I stood in an upper room of the Brooklyn Borough in New York City to see the St. Francis of Assissi exhibition. I reflected on our own history as a young church - our own cycles of decline and renewal, crisis and change. I specifically thought about the current crisis catering on rejecting behavior towards the queer Latter-day Saints.

All I Could Bare is the story of a mild-mannered graduate student who "took the road less clothed". Seymour embarked on his journey in the 1990s, when Washington, D.C.'s gay club scene was notoriously no-holds-barred, all the while trying to keep his newfound vocation a secret from his parents and maintain a relationship with his boyfriend, Seth. Along the way he met some unforgettable characters....

StoryCorps OutLoud sets out across the country to record and preserve the stories of LGBT individuals along with their families and friends. OutLoud is a project undertaken in the memory of Isay's father, psychiatrist Dr. Richard Isay. Professionally credited for helping to persuade the mental-health community that homosexuality is not a mental disorder, Dr. Isay was himself a closeted gay man for many years.

Boys is an anthology of essays showcasing the voices, stories, and lives of gay, queer, and trans men from around the world. Through these essays, listeners are allowed an intimate glimpse into moments like the time one of the boys accidentally came out as gay on MySpace, another was kidnapped by his mother who wanted to "pray the gay away", to the first time a boy went to a leather bar after transitioning to male and before he became a famous porn artist and performer. Boys shows listeners that at the end of the day, there isn't one type of boy in the world, but lots of boys with all their own stories.

Banning gay propaganda can backfire. Spectacularly. In the 1980s, when the UK Government of Margaret Thatcher outlawed the "promotion" of homosexuality, gays were still semi-criminal. As well as immoral, ridiculous, disgusting, diseased, and after your kids. Since then, however, UK gays have been promoted more rapidly and giddily than almost any persecuted, despised group in history. In just a generation or so they have achieved legal equality, civil rights, and even respectability. Today they are gay married by the Conservative Prime Minister, no less. Homosexuality has joined the golf club.

Paul Burston wasn’t always the iconic voice of LGBTQ+ London that he is today. Paul came out in the mid-1980s, when ‘gay’ still felt like a dirty word, especially in the small Welsh town where he grew up. He moved to London hoping for a happier life, only to watch in horror as his new-found community was decimated by AIDS.
