Da Peter Øvig gravede sig ned i en research om seksuelle overgreb mod børn på danske børnehjem, viste der sig et uhyggeligt billede: Overgrebene var omfattende, velorganiserede og stod ofte på over flere årtier. Samtidig viste det sig, at både børn og ansatte på børnehjemmene havde forsøgt at råbe ledelse og myndigheder op, alt sammen forgæves. Gennem otte års arbejde mødte Peter Øvig en række tidligere børnehjemsbørn, som fortalte om organiserede seksuelle overgreb, de havde oplevet på børnehjem rundt i landet, især i 1960’erne og -70’erne.

Gennem sin barndom har forfatter og journalist Janne Aagaard besøgt sin mors moster Gudrun på et plejehjem i Arden og undret sig over Gudruns skæbne: "Hun var lidt af en legende i vores familie. Gudrun, der var indlagt stort set hele sit liv, damen med bare et ben, hende der elskede mænd. Skammen og skylden lå som et stort tæppe over hende og hendes begrædelige liv." Gudrun er en af de 4500 danskere, der fra midten af 1940’ene og 40 år frem fik det hvide snit - det sidste blev udført i 1983.
