Catiline's War, by Sallust, who was better known as Gaius Sallustius Crispus, (86-c. 35 BC), tells of the conspiracy in 63 BCE led by L. Sergius Catilina, who plotted to assassinate numerous senators and take control of the Roman government but was thwarted by Cicero.

Historical Sketches of the Ancient Negro (1920) by Edward and Josephine sought to correct the image of their African ancestors in the perception of Afro-Americans. The authors explore the ancient history of Cush, Ethiopia, Nubia and other African kingdoms, relying on Biblical text and other primary sources to retell the story of black Africans from an Afrocentric point of view, and providing an important early contribution to Ancient African history.

Benjamin Tucker Tanner (1835 - 1923) was an African American clergyman and editor. He served as a Bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church from 1886, and founded The Christian Recorder, an important early African American newspaper. In The Negro in Holy Writ, published in 1900, Tanner shows that the African people are described in the Bible. He argues that the ancient Cushim were the ancient Ethiopians, and that they were Negroes. The book provides evidence for the unity of all mankind.

Rufus L. Perry was an educator and Baptist minister from Brooklyn, New York. He was a member of the African Civilization Society and was a co-founder of the Howard Colored Orphan Asylum. The Cushite is a short work that investigates the history of ancient peoples.

Publius Cornelius Tacitus (c. 56 to c. 120 AD) was a senator and a historian of the Roman Empire, and considered to be one of the greatest Roman historians. Five works ascribed to Tacitus have survived. The surviving portions of his two major works, the Annals and the Histories span the history of the Roman Empire from the death of Augustus, in 14 AD, to the years of the First Jewish-Roman War, in 70 AD.

Dr. Joseph Elias Hayne (1848-1911) was a physician and minister of the American Methodist Episcopal Church. He was one of a number of early black writers who challenged white racist theories that demeaned people of African origin. In his book The Negro in Sacred History (1887), he sought to refute all prejudices against black people by tracing the descendants of the biblical Ham with reference to archaeological and historical scholarship. Hayne argued that Ham was Noah’s favorite son and identified the Mediterranean deity Jupiter Ammon as a representative figure of Ham.

Assyria was a Mesopotamian kingdom which became a brutal empire of the ancient Near East and the Levant. This encyclopaedic text covers the lay of the land, the capital, and other cities, plus the language, cuneiform writing, customs, religion, arts, and architecture of Assyria. The city state of Ashur dates back to about the 25th century BCE. The history deals with the Assyrian conquests of Anatolia, Babylonia, the Iranian plateau, and the Levant, until it suffered a series of defeats at the hand of the Medes, Persians, and Babylonians.

Jesse Max Barber, born in Blackstock, South Carolina, to former slave parents, was a journalist, dentist, and civil rights leader. His literary career began in 1903 while attending Virginia Union University in Richmond. In this work, The Negro of the Earlier World, Barber contends that a race without traditions and without history is most likely to be a race without backbone and without self-respect.

"The Great Hymn to the Aten" is the longest of a number of hymn-poems written to the sun-disk deity Aten. Composed in the middle of the 14th century BC, it is attributed to Pharaoh Akhenaten, who radically changed traditional forms of Egyptian religion by replacing them with Atenism. According to the Egyptologist Toby Wilkinson, it is one of the most significant and splendid pieces of poetry to survive from the pre-Homeric world.

Ibrahima Abdul Rahman or Abd al-Rahmana was born around 1762 in the African kingdom of Timbuktu, a region now part of Mali. At the age of 26, he was captured in an ambush, enslaved, and eventually transported to Mississippi, where he became a field worker on a cotton plantation. The manumission of Ibrahima and his wife Isabella was obtained prior to the publication of this 1828 work.

Sin-Gashid's Endowment of the Temple Ê-Ana is an inscription of 27 lines in the Akkadian language, of an endowment made by an early Mesopotamian king to the great temple at Erech called Ê-ana (House of Heaven).

King Menuas of Urartu was a great warrior and builder. Urartu centred on the district of Lake Van in Anatolia, but also extended over the Transcaucasian regions of modern Russia and into northwestern Iran in the ninth-sixth centuries BCE. This inscription deals with cities and territories conquered by Menuas.

Tiglath-Pileser I was a king of Assyria during the Middle Assyrian period (1114-1076 BC). He expanded Assyrian rule into Anatolia and Syria, and to the shores of the Mediterranean. From this inscription, it is clear that cultivated a fear of himself in his subjects and in his enemies alike.

The ancient Greek poet Hesiod lived around the same time as Homer. He is considered to be an economist and also wrote works on mythology, ancient time-keeping, and farming techniques. The Hesiod Collection includes The Shield of Heracles, Theogony (the origins and genealogies of the Greek gods), and Works and Days (a farmer’s almanac in which Hesiod instructs his brother Perses in the art of agriculture).
