It has often been said that the greatest invention of all time was the sail, which facilitated the internationalization of the globe and thus, ushered in the modern era. Columbus’ contact with the New World, alongside European maritime contact with the Far East, transformed human history, and, in particular, the history of Africa.

The story starts in the present day - fracking on the Fort Berthold reservation - it has changed the beauty of the landscape and the culture of the native people, who live there. I note the comparison in the UK, with regards to the fracking and the potential damage it causes. I reflect, back to when I first visited the reservation - to research the link between a 12th century prince and Mandan native Americans. My story deals with the struggle of the natives of North Dakota over the years.

The records of the world can shove no parallel to this astounding mortality.

Rather than flailing in a morass, the peoples of the revolutionary Ohio Valley actively and persistently sought to establish a new political order that would affirm their land claims, protect them against attack, and promote trade.

The American Indian Wars, a series of conflicts between white settlers and Native Americans which took place in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, were complex, brutal, and many. An official United States Census report published in 1898 noted at least 40 wars which had taken place in the previous 100 years. The total number of individual wars probably numbers well over 100, though many were localized and on a very small scale.

When the American government was founded, the Founders and Framers assumed a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. That government is dying. It is under the authority of not we, the people, but rather a small elite that is trying to snuff out the great experiment of man ruling himself - the common man - the man that within the right system of government can attain his purpose to achieve happiness.

Hightower frames his story within the larger history of Old Oklahoma, beginning in Indian Territory, where displaced tribes and freedmen, wealthy cattlemen, and prospective homesteaders became embroiled in disputes over public land and federal government policies. Hightower captures the drama of the Boomer incursions and the Run of ’89, as well as the nascent urbanization of the townsite that would become Oklahoma City. All of these events played out in a political vacuum until Congress officially created Oklahoma Territory in the Organic Act of May 1890.

In 1809, John Potts and John Colter were taking two canoes up the Jefferson River in Montana. Potts and Colter came upon a band of several hundred Blackfeet Indians who demanded they come ashore. Colter guided his canoe ashore and was disarmed and stripped naked. When Potts refused to bring his canoe ashore he was shot and wounded. He returned fire and killed one of the Blackfeet warriors. He died immediately, riddled by a hail of bullets fired by the Indians on the shore.
