Born in 1860s Missouri, nobody expected George Washington Carver to succeed. Slaves were not allowed to be educated. After the Civil War, Carver enrolled in classes and proved to be a star student. He became the first black student at Iowa State Agricultural College and later its first black professor. He went on to the Tuskegee Institute where he specialized in botany (the study of plants) and developed techniques to grow crops better. His work with vegetables, especially peanuts, made him famous and changed agriculture forever.

As young boys, Orville and Wilbur Wright loved all things mechanical. As young men, they gained invaluable skills essential for their success by working with printing presses, bicycles, motors, and any sort of machinery they could get their hands on. As adults, the brothers worked together to invent, build, and fly the world's first successful airplane. Seine Beschreibungen andersartiger Kulturen faszinieren ganz Europa, sein von Narben gezeichnetes Gesicht weist ihn als entschlossenen Abenteurer aus.

Der berühmte britische Forschungsreisende David Livingstone kam 1841 als Missionar und Arzt nach Südafrika und unternahm seit 1849 große Expeditionen ins Landesinnere. Er war der erste Forscher, der den ganzen Kontinent von Westen nach Osten durchquerte und wurde schon zu Lebzeiten zu einer Legende. 1868 galt Livingstone als verschollen, da man seit Jahren kein Lebenszeichen mehr von ihm erhalten hatte.

1910 bricht der Engländer Robert Scott zu einer Expedition auf, um als erster Mensch den Südpol zu erreichen. Doch während er zur Antarktis segelt, erfährt er von einer norwegischen Expedition unter Roald Amundsen mit dem gleichen Ziel. Der dramatische Zweikampf beginnt. Das ist der Auftakt zu einer der spannendsten und dramatischsten Episode in der Geschichte der Erforschung der Antarktis. Denn es ging um alles oder nichts.

5. August 1908. Das Luftschiff LZ4 des siebzigjährigen Grafen Zeppelin muss aufgrund des schlechten Wetters bei Echterdingen notlanden. Es wird aus seiner Verankerung gerissen und geht vor zehntausenden von Zuschauern in Flammen auf. Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin investierte sein gesamtes Privatvermögen in den Bau dieses Luftschiffes. Mit dem Absturz scheint das Schicksal der Deutschen Luftschifffahrt besiegelt.

David Karp developed Tumblr after he tried to start a blog and found the process daunting. With most platforms a blogger faces a huge, empty text box that begs to be filled with words.
