Der berühmte britische Forschungsreisende David Livingstone kam 1841 als Missionar und Arzt nach Südafrika und unternahm seit 1849 große Expeditionen ins Landesinnere. Er war der erste Forscher, der den ganzen Kontinent von Westen nach Osten durchquerte und wurde schon zu Lebzeiten zu einer Legende. 1868 galt Livingstone als verschollen, da man seit Jahren kein Lebenszeichen mehr von ihm erhalten hatte.
Der englische Zeitungsreporter Henry Morton Stanley wurde ausgeschickt, um ihn im undurchdringlichen Innern Afrikas zu suchen. Stanley fand schließlich den Forscher und begrüßte ihn mit dem berühmten Satz: "Mr. Livingstone, I presume?"
Der Brite Neil McGrigor folgte 2006 dem Lauf des Nils von der Mündung bis zur Quelle. Er berichtet über seine abenteuerliche Fahrt und seinen spannenden Entdeckungen an der Quelle des Nils.
