The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Franklin from 1771 to 1790. The author himself appears to have titled the work his Memoirs, and it is an honest self-appraisal of the man who drafted the Declaration of Independence and negotiated the peace treaty with Britain. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.

John L. Ransom was taken prisoner in 1863 when his regiment was split into two smaller forces in East Tennessee. He was placed into Andersonville Prison, formerly known as Camp Sumter. Nelson Appleton Miles (1839 - 1925) was an American military general. From 1895 to 1903, he served as the last commanding general of the United States Army before the office was abolished. The 1911 autobiography of General Miles is titled Serving the Republic, and chronicles his career as a soldier. He participated in many of the battles of the Civil War as a volunteer and afterwards took part as a commander in most of the Indian campaigns on the Western plains. His final service was in the Spanish-American War.

Henry Ward Beecher (June 24, 1813 - March 8, 1887) was a Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer and speaker, known for his support of the abolition of slavery and his emphasis on God's love. In one of a series of lectures to honor his father, Lyman Beecher, he waxes rhapsodic about the pipe organ: “I look upon the history and development of the organ for Christian use as a sublime instance of the guiding hand of God’s providence”.
