Jacob Elliot doesn’t want a temporary job in the mailroom at Delphi Enterprises, but after two post-college years of unpaid internships and living in his parents’ basement, he needs the work. Then, on his first day, the unthinkable happens: toxic gas descends on a meeting in Delphi’s outdoor amphitheater, killing all the regular employees and leaving Jacob stranded inside the vast office complex. Wandering through Delphi headquarters, Jacob finds other survivors: Lauren, a disillusioned classics major; Swati, a fitness instructor; and Dominic, a business-school student.

Quinze ans après l’effondrement, le jeune Burl vit isolé avec ses deux mères, Eva et Nell. Pour éviter d’attirer l’attention, elles ont brûlé leur maison et se sont installées au cœur de la forêt. Non loin d’une grande souche, elles se sont construites une vie bien réglée. Pour se nourrir, Burl et ses mères chassent et cueillent. La danse, la musique et les récits qu’ils inventent au coin du feu rythment leurs journées.
