Commonly cited as one of the most important works of Anglo-Saxon literature, Beowulf is an epic poem that traces the exploits of the titular hero. Ryokan (1758–1831) is, along with Dogen and Hakuin, one of the three giants of Zen in Japan. Omar Khayyám (1048–1122) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and a philosopher who was not known as a poet in his lifetime.
