Bonnie's and Debbie's desire to get rich causes them to respond to a sure-thing magazine advertisement. They are soon embarked upon an ambitious summer of selling up and down the river. Not that circumstances end quite in the way they had imagined!

The Fellows family has joined numerous others striving to make a go of homesteading in the Oregon high desert. But the venture has been disastrous from the start. Paul's brother, Pierre, becomes a victim of an accident, and the main character accompanied by his niece, Junia, sets off for a dangerous journey to Arius' lands to save the soul of Junia's father.
