Between 1947 and 1957, Ealing Studios produced a series of immensely popular, darkly funny film comedies that made the West London borough famous throughout the world. Almost 50 years later, four of these timeless films were recreated for BBC Radio 4, and are now collected together for the first time.

A darkly comic noir about a chicken living in a world of anthropomorphic eggs who's wanted for a murder he didn't commit. Life is tough for an embry. Considered a vestigial organ at best and a parasite at worst, chicken embryos are usually aborted by the egg folk early in life. Once in a while, one survives and slips through, hatching into an embry, an ostracized, lower caste anthropomorphic chicken. They have their own ghettos, and are barely tolerated by polite society.

Once an amusing extrovert with a reputation as a prankster, Mr. Rosen is entering his senior years as a stoic, thirty-year converted introvert who hates change, has little to no interest in people and is more than content to have his wife sit in the navigator's seat of his life. Since becoming a practising introvert, there have been almost no changes in his life, and for the few that there were, his wife had walked him through them, including the recent move to a much smaller home in a lower/middle-class neighbourhood.

Privatdetektiv Philip Maloney ermittelt mit Charme, Schalk und unverkennbarer Raubeinigkeit. Seine Fälle werden ihm von seinen Klienten zugetragen und beginnen harmlos, doch stößt Maloney im Laufe der Ermittlungen meistens auf eine Leiche. Widerwillig muss er mit der Polizei zusammenarbeiten. Der zuständige Beamte ist nicht der Hellste und löst lieber Kreuzworträtsel als Kriminalfälle. Am Ende klärt immer Maloney den Fall.
