Prince Dmitry Ivanovich Nekhlyudov, having fulfilled his duty on a jury, unexpectedly recognizes a woman named Katerina Maslova. She was once a maid he had seduced and subsequently abandoned, leaving her pregnant. His aunt cast her out, and she eventually found herself drawn into a life of prostitution, eventually becoming entangled in a crime. As he observes her unjust trial and subsequent imprisonment, Nekhlyudov becomes consumed with guilt and a desire for redemption.

The novel focuses on love, society norms, and freedom, centered on Anna’s affair with Count Vronsky.

Questo racconto, scritto nel periodo 1896-1904, e pubblicato postumo, racconta vicende in parte autobiografiche ed è ambientato nella guerra del Caucaso del 1852. Sklovskij scrisse che "Hadži-Murat è il racconto sui contadini che Tolstoj per tutta la vita desiderò scrivere"... E' stato anche ritenuto un capolavoro sconosciuto, un racconto polifonico niente affatto inferiore ai grandi romanzi da lui scritti, e la descrizione di una società cecena è quanto mai attuale e interessante.
