Questo racconto, scritto nel periodo 1896-1904, e pubblicato postumo, racconta vicende in parte autobiografiche ed è ambientato nella guerra del Caucaso del 1852. Sklovskij scrisse che "Hadži-Murat è il racconto sui contadini che Tolstoj per tutta la vita desiderò scrivere"... E' stato anche ritenuto un capolavoro sconosciuto, un racconto polifonico niente affatto inferiore ai grandi romanzi da lui scritti, e la descrizione di una società cecena è quanto mai attuale e interessante. Il racconto è stato tradotto dalla Duchessa di Andria, per le edizioni Slavia, 1931. Cornice musicale di Cesar Cui, opera 77 n.2.
