Sklovskij scrisse che "Hadži-Murat è il racconto sui contadini che Tolstoj per tutta la vita desiderò scrivere"... E' stato anche ritenuto un capolavoro sconosciuto, un racconto polifonico niente affatto inferiore ai grandi romanzi da lui scritti, e la descrizione di una società cecena è quanto mai attuale e interessante.
