Henry René Albert Guy de Maupassant nació en Dieppe, Francia, el 5 de agosto de 1850. Maupassant fue admirador y amigo de Gustave Flaubert al que conoció en 1867. Flaubert lo tomó bajo su protección, le abrió la puerta de algunos periódicos y le presentó a Iván Turgénev y Émile Zola. El escritor viajó a París tras la derrota francesa en la Guerra Franco-Prusiana de 1870 y trabajó como funcionario en varios ministerios, hasta que publicó en 1880 su primera gran obra, Bola de Sebo.

"La Main d'écorché" est la première nouvelle publiée de Maupassant. Elle paraît d'abord dans l'Almanach lorrain de Pont-à-Mousson en 1875 sous le pseudonyme de Joseph Prunier. La trame sera reprise dans la Main (1883). Pierre, un ami du narrateur a fait l'acquisition d'une main d'un criminel et supplicié, qui semble douée d'une vie propre. The devil, who lived on the hill across the bay, owned all the rich lands which produced fine crops. One day, St. Michael offered the devil a deal: He would work the land, and they would both share the crops equally. The devil agreed, and Satan declared that he would get everything that grew above the ground, while St. Michael would get the crops that grew underground. So the lands produced nothing but carrots, turnips, onions, and parsnips. Satan was furious, but St. Michael offered to give him everything that grew underground the next year. The following year, all of Satan’s lands were covered with wheat, oats, peas, and cabbage that thrives above ground.
