Life has the capacity of great moments and attainment, of lives well lived, fulfilling for ourselves and for those we touch. But for others life is arduous. There is no spark to ignite the curiosity, to explore and achieve a stability and a growth to their lives. Indeed their lives, in their own eyes, become almost meaningless, their sense of themselves subsumed under a myriad of problems, whether real or imagined. Seismic events in a life might crush them; the loss of a loved one for instance. Coping is difficult, support hard to find and isolation abounds.

Walter Schnaffs' Adventure, published in 1883, is a poignant tale that captures the essence of a Prussian soldier's struggle with the realities of war and his desire for peace. The story begins with Schnaffs, a stout and peaceful man, who finds himself in enemy territory during the Franco-Prussian War. His fear of battle and his longing for his family lead him to a desperate decision to surrender to the French forces. Despite his fear of being captured, Schnaffs decides to surrender to an unarmed villager, only to find himself as a prisoner in a French mansion.

A gentleman enjoying the morning over the River Seine waves to a steamer, and the nightmare begins. He believes he may be going insane, but then he begins to feel there is an entity that he cannot see invading his mind and his home. The entity is perhaps an invader from another world. Maupassant fue admirador y amigo de Gustave Flaubert al que conoció en 1867. Flaubert lo tomó bajo su protección, le abrió la puerta de algunos periódicos y le presentó a Iván Turgueniev y Émile Zola. El escritor viajó a París tras la derrota francesa en la Guerra Franco-Prusiana de 1870 y trabajó como funcionario en varios ministerios, hasta que publicó en 1880 su primera gran obra, Bola de Sebo. Esta publicación permite a Maupassant adquirir notoriedad en el mundillo literario.
