There is no spark to ignite the curiosity, to explore and achieve a stability and a growth to their lives. Walter Schnaffs' Adventure, published in 1883, is a poignant tale that captures the essence of a Prussian soldier's struggle with the realities of war and his desire for peace. The story begins with Schnaffs, a stout and peaceful man, who finds himself in enemy territory during the Franco-Prussian War. His fear of battle and his longing for his family lead him to a desperate decision to surrender to the French forces. Despite his fear of being captured, Schnaffs decides to surrender to an unarmed villager, only to find himself as a prisoner in a French mansion.

A vague jealousy, one of those dormant jealousies which grow up between brothers or sisters and slowly ripen till they burst, on the occasion of a marriage perhaps, or of some good fortune happening to one of them, kept them on the alert in a sort of brotherly and non-aggressive animosity. They were fond of each other, it is true, but they watched each other. Pierre, five years old when Jean was born, had looked with the eyes of a little petted animal at that other little animal which had suddenly come to lie in his father's and mother's arms and to be loved and fondled by them.

Boule de Suif est une nouvelle incontournable de Guy de Maupassant, à la fois courte et percutante. L’histoire se déroule pendant la guerre franco-prussienne, alors qu’un groupe de voyageurs fuit Rouen, occupée par les Prussiens. A stagecoach containing a microcosm of French society seek to escape to Le Havre during the Prussian war. Stopping at an inn along the way, they soon realize they have blundered into Prussian occupied territory. The travelers are not allowed to leave until one woman, a prostitute known as Boule de Suif, (literally suet dumpling, or ball of fat), sleeps with the commanding officer. This turn of events is met with universal indignation by the travelers. But as the days stretch out, everyone’s true colors are revealed.
