Johann Wolfgang Goethe was a colossus of German literature and a true Renaissance man. A novelist, dramatist, poet, humanist, scientist and philosopher, he wrote the first international bestseller, The Sorrows of Young Werther, and his epic masterpiece Faust is one of the most famous and celebrated dramas of all time.

Goethe’s two-part dramatic work, Faust, based on a traditional theme, and finally completed in 1831, is an exploration of that restless intellectual and emotional urge which found its fullest expression in the European Romantic movement, to which Goethe was an early and major contributor. Part I of the work outlines a pact Faust makes with the devil, Mephistopheles, and encompasses the tragedy of Gretchen, whom Faust seduces.

Mit dieser Aufnahme wird zum ersten Mal in Deutschland der Versuch gemacht, ein großes dramatisches Gedicht der Weltliteratur als Ganzes auf der Schallplatte wiederzugeben: Goethes "Faust" in der dramaturgischen Einrichtung und unter der Regie von Gustaf Gründgens. Es mag daran erinnert werden, dass dies genau 125 Jahre nach der Uraufführung des ersten Teils in Braunschweig (1829) und genau 100 Jahre nach der des zweiten in Hamburg (1854) geschieht.

Im Zentrum steht der Gelehrte Heinrich Faust, der einen verhängnisvollen Pakt mit Mephisto schließt, um grenzenloses Wissen und irdische Genüsse zu erlangen. Goethes Drama vereint existenzielle Fragen, große Gefühle und tiefgründige Sprache – und ist bis heute ein zeitloses Meisterwerk der Weltliteratur.

Ein klassisches Schauspiel von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe nach der Vorlage von Euripides’ "Iphigenie bei den Taurern." Faust is a tragic play in two parts that reworks the late medieval myth of a brilliant but disillusioned scholar who makes a deal with the devil. Faust is considered by many to be Goethe's masterpiece and the greatest work of German literature. Part I sets out Faust’s despair, his pact with Mephistopheles, and his love for Gretchen. Part II deals with Faust’s life at court, the wooing and winning of Helen of Troy, and his purification and redemption.

Das Drama des rechtschaffenen Ritters Götz von Berlichingen, dessen Freiheitsliebe und Kaisertreue gegen einen intriganten Adel auf verlorenem Posten stehen, ist noch heute ein beliebtes Stück auf den Bühnen - und Bestandteil vieler Literaturlisten der Schulen!

Auslöser für die Entwicklung des Urfausts war die Verurteilung und Hinrichtung der Kindesmörderin Susanna Margaretha Brandt. Vermutlich verfolgte Goethe den gesamten Prozess, da nach seinem Tod in seinem Haus Abschriften von Prozessakten gefunden wurden. Es existiert nur eine einzige Abschrift des Urfaust vom Hoffräulein Luise von Göchhausen.

Nachdem er mit Mephistopheles am Ende des ersten Teils die Flucht ergriff, entwickelt er sich im zweiten Teil stetig weiter, wird Künstler, Zeitreisender, Gatte der schönen Helena, Herrscher - es ist ein wahres Füllhorn der menschlichen Entwicklung, das Goethe hier ausschüttet!
