Author Gaston Leroux, born May 6, 1868, published his most famous work, The Phantom of the Opera, as a serial in 1909 and as a book in 1910 (with an English translation appearing in 1911). Phantom, with its occult overtones, has been made into several film and stage productions of the same name.

The story begins with an investigation into some strange reports of an "opera ghost", legendary for making the great Paris opera performers ill-at-ease when they sit alone in their dressing rooms. Some allege to have seen the ghost in evening clothes moving about in the shadows. Nothing is done, however, until the disappearance of Christine during her triumphant performance.

The lights dim at the Paris Opera House. The exquisite Christine Daae enraptures the audience with her mellifluous voice. Immediately, Raoul de Chagny falls deeply in love.
