'The two foes of human happiness are pain and boredom.' Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was one of the most influential philosophers of the 19th century because his humanistic, atheistic, if pessimistic views chimed with a new secularism that was emerging from a Western society dominated by religion. Despite his rather forbidding image (and a few outdated views), he is one of the most approachable German philosophers, and this is certainly evident in these two key works, The Wisdom of Life and Counsels and Maxims.

In this final part to Schopenhauer's momentous and hugely influential work, his original and wide-ranging observations are as lively as ever. Though cast as a 'pessimist' by history, he is anything but that to read - and listen to. Here are the last supplementary comments his original work (published 1818), the fruit of decades of further reflection.

Suddenly confronted with his own mortality after a routine checkup, eminent psychotherapist Julius Hertzfeld is forced to reexamine his life and work - and seeks out Philip Slate, a sex addict whom he failed to help some 20 years earlier. The Arthurian Romances by Chrétien de Troyes form the wellspring of the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Stories of knightly valour in the Welsh Marches had existed before the 12th century, but it was the magnificent poetry and imagination of Chrétien, the 12th century French poet and trouvère, which brought alive the great characters of Arthur, his wife Guinevere, Lancelot and others.

Die in dem superklugen, verflossenen Jahrhundert, allen früheren zum Trotz, überall nicht sowohl gebannten, als doch geächteten Gespenster sind, wie schon vorher die Magie, während dieser letzten 25 Jahre, in Deutschland rehabilitiert worden. Schopenhauers Analyse über den Gegenstand Mensch wird fortgesetzt. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die menschlichen Schwächen wie Stolz, Ehre, Eitelkeit und die Abhängigkeit und Überbewertung von der Meinung anderer. Darüber hinaus spielt das Verhältnis von Bürger zum Staat eine Rolle und die ständige Verdrehung und Verwechslung von Lüge und Wahrheit.

Im Jahr 1851 erschien eine Sammlung "kleiner philosophischer Schriften". Im zweiten Band dieser Sammlung ist der Text "Über Schriftstellerei und Stil" enthalten. Arthur Schopenhauer beschreibt in den ersten Abschnitten die drei Arten von Autoren und deren Beweggründe. Später geht er auf Stoff und Stil der Bücher aus.
