Es quizas el cuento mas famoso de James Joyce.... Es una critica del famoso autor a la sociedad Irlandesa. La historia es simple: una cena en casa de tres hermanas viejas y solteras. La musica es un ingrediente indispensable de la obra, como lo es Gabriel el sobrino de las ancianas. El nombre original The Dead, puede traducirse como un solo muerto o varios.

"Arcilla" es la historia de Maria, una mujer que cria a los ninos de una familia y anos despus va a pasar la Fiesta de todos los Santos con uno de ellos, ya adulto. Mara es un personaje que parece desconectado de la realidad; soltera y mayor, Mara representa a una mujer irlandesa ignorante y humilde. El nombre Arcilla, viene del elemento usado por Maria para jugar con los ninos. La arcilla, representa la muerte en la cultura irlandesa. Maria puede morir pronto.

"Una Pequena Nube", por James Joyce, es la historia de dos hombres, dos amigos de infancia que se encuentran luego de muchos anos para beber juntos. Es una historia sobre el contraste de sus vidas, sobre la envidia, la hipocresia y la inconformidad.

"Después de la Carrera" puede entenderse superficialmente como la historia de un grupo de mozalbetes de distintas nacionalidades que viven una vida disipada, compitiendo en carreras de autos y jugando a las cartas. Sin embargo, la historia es un simbolismo sobre distintas naciones y su rol en la carrera politica que vivia el mundo en los tiempos de Joyce, muy similar a la nuestra, actual.
