Se trata de un manifiesto encargado por la Liga de los Comunistas a Karl Marx y Friedrich Engels entre 1847 y 1848, y publicado por primera vez en Londres el 21 de febrero de 1848. Outlining the theory of communism by Marx and Engels, this political document explains the material conception of history and presents their theories and ideas of how in due course socialism would replace the capitalist society of the time. It discusses the relationship between the proletarians and the bourgeoisie, the communists and the proletarians, and the communists and other opposition parties.

En noviembre de 1847 la Liga de los Comunistas encargó a unos aún veinteañeros Karl Marx y Friedrich Engels la redacción de un programa detallado del partido, destinado a la población general. First published as the 1848 revolutions erupted throughout Europe, this revolutionary political tract articulated an entirely new understanding of governments and history. The manifesto outlined a radical, new political agenda that would lead to an equal and classless society. In one of the most powerful political pamphlets ever written, Marx and Engels predicted that Europe was on the verge of revolution.

The publication in 1848 of The Communist Manifesto came at a time when industrialization was reaching its peak, and signs of the cost to the working class blatant; the Revolutions of 1848 were just getting under way. Marx and Engels shared the belief that "the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles" and this notion formed a central part of the manifesto they crafted together. They believed that industrialization was simply a new form of struggle among the classes - the price paid by the lower class still high.

Beer, with key selections from Capital and "The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte", this volume features an especially helpful introduction that serves as a guide to Marxist political and economic theory and to placing the specific writings in their contemporary setting.
