Three years have passed since Sherlock Holmes and his nemesis Moriarty vanished into the abyss of the Reichenbach Falls. In that time the criminals of London have been able to sleep safe in their beds. But the capital has never been in greater need of its protector.

"The Return of Sherlock Holmes" is a collection of 13 Sherlock Holmes stories, originally published in 1903-1904, by Arthur Conan Doyle. This was the first Holmes collection since 1893, when Holmes had "died" in "The Final Problem". Having published "The Hound of the Baskervilles" in 1901-1902 (although setting it before Holmes' death) Doyle came under intense pressure to revive his famous character. The first story is set in 1894 and has Holmes returning in London and explaining the period from 1891-94, a period called "The Great Hiatus" by Sherlockian enthusiasts.

The 13 mysteries in this collection were originally published in The Strand Magazine and Collier's in Great Britain and the United States. Published in 1905, this book was the first Holmes collection since 1893, when Holmes died in a confrontation with his arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty in "The Final Problem". The success of The Hound of the Baskervilles, which was published in 1901-1902 and is set before Holmes's death, created great pressure on Doyle to revive his famous character.

The plot centers on a locked-room murder and Holmes's reunion with Watson, revealing Holmes's survival and continued pursuit of justice. It was first published in Collier's in the US on September 26, 1903, and in The Strand Magazine in the UK in October 1903.

The story follows Holmes and Watson as they investigate John Hector McFarlane, a young lawyer accused of murdering his client, builder Jonas Oldacre, after Oldacre unexpectedly named McFarlane the sole beneficiary of his will.

Holmes visits Watson late one night to investigate the death of Colonel James Barclay of Aldershot Camp. Barclay's wife, Nancy, is suspected of murder. Despite Barclay's devotion to his wife, he had a vindictive streak, suffered from bouts of depression, and disliked being alone at night. Holmes digs deeper into the mysterious circumstances surrounding the case.

The story centers on Holmes deciphering a mysterious code involving stick-figure "dancing men" symbols. It is notable for being one of the few where Holmes's client dies after seeking his help.
