    A neighbor whispered about a mechanic in the industrial district, a place people avoid after dark. “He fixes things nobody else can,” she said, her voice shaking. “But don’t look too close.”

    I tried to beg him to help me back up but he was already walking away before I could form the words. I raised my undamaged hand to my head and was greeted with a sharp pain on the side of my head and a small wet patch of blood.
    Panic racing throughout my body, I forced myself to my feet. It felt like hours since Andrew had gone off for help and it was now well into the night. I stumbled my way through the overgrowth and began my slow ascent up the hillside back towards the trail.

The silence, the natural beauty of the landscape. The desert affords you the right balance of solitude. Just you and nature. You either feel transported back in time among the first settlers of the west, or to the distant future on a far-off desert planet. You lose your thoughts in the desert – it absolves you of them.
