• #15: Secrets of the Stones - with Laura-Jayne Brown
    Sep 29 2022

In the last in the present series, I am joined by the singer and artist, Laura-Jayne Brown, known professionally as Elle-Jay.

Laura and I begin by recounting memories of how we first met when music brought us together. She then recounts two huge moments in her teenage life: leaving home at the tender age of 15, and then becoming a mother at the age of 19, but not necessarily in the way you might think.

Her third trip back through time is the shortest hop we've had yet, just a couple of months back to July 2022, when she finally got the chance to fulfil a lifelong dream of seeing one of the biggest rock bands of all time.

We move on to imagine life in the shoes of Billy Connolly, and what it must have been like overcoming a difficult upbringing to become the star we are all familiar with.

In the final section, we imagine travelling back in time to unlock the secrets of Stonehenge. There are many theories about who built it and why, but one thing we do conclude is that the ancients had advanced astronomical knowledge which was incredible for their time.

  • #14: The Parnell Dynasty - with Gemma Parnell
    Sep 22 2022

This week's episode was a first for the podcast as my guest, Gemma Parnell, joined me in the 'studio' to record the episode face-to-face.

Despite enjoying many chats with Gemma in the past, I had no idea about her illustrious ancestors of the nineteenth century. This formed a major part of the podcast as I learnt about former MP, Charles Parnell, and his sister, Anna, who was campaigning for women's rights long before the suffragettes came on the scene. Appropriately, as a tribute to Anna, this episode was recorded on the 111th anniversary of her death.

Other topics discussed included the importance of keeping community connections or forming new ones when your life circumstances change, for example, becoming a parent or moving to another town.

  • #13: Back to the Eighties - with Keith A Pearson
    Sep 15 2022

There's definitely a 1980s nostalgia flavour to this week's episode, which is understandable, given the age of both myself and the guest. It's Keith A Pearson, a fellow time travel author who writes in the same genre as myself.

Among the many topics discussed are the joy of the early days of home computing and also of supporting possibly the most unfashionable football club in the country, Aldershot FC. We also talk about the carefree holidays of our later teenage years, the last time that the word responsibility wasn't part of our vocabularies.

In the second part of the podcast, Keith steps into some very lofty shoes - indeed you would have to say, the loftiest of all. Finally, we talk about a chance to play detective in time. What mystery took place in Fleet in Hampshire in 1939 that Keith would like to solve?

I highly recommend checking out Keith's books as we write in the same genre and have found that people who like books from one of us also enjoy the books of the other. You can find all his books on Amazon here:  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Keith-A-Pearson/e/B01M685HKL

  • #12: Life in the Wild West - with Seb Abecasis
    Sep 8 2022

My guest this week, Seb Abecasis, begins by recalling his final day at Eton College, one of those watershed moments when we move from one stage of life to the next.

We then progress to talk about more landmark moments of the subsequent years, from University to early forays into the ultra-competitive 21st-century job market.

Taking the Time Bubble further back into time we imagine what life might have been like as Billy the Kid, and indeed the entire way of life in the Wild West. It may have been incredibly dangerous, but it was probably one of the last times that people in western civilisations were truly free.

Finally, we travel even further back to spend a while in Medieval England.

Seb is the host of the successful Not The BBC channel on YouTube which presents a deeper level of insight than you might get from the corporation. You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCClhbLPi45TQ7hcjVdI387A

  • #11: Unwelcome Pink Gravy - with Danny Doran
    Sep 1 2022

This week's episode, with Danny Doran, begins with a tale of how a trip to Mcdonald's took an embarrassing turn before the first day ends on a tragic note.

A discussion on schooldays then ensues, with reflections on how difficult it is to choose the right subjects, and how easy it is to miss opportunities by following the wrong path.

Fast forward to Australia, in 2004, when another one of those life-changing decision moments comes along. To go, or not to go, that was the question.

In the second part of the podcast, we discuss the immediate post-war years in the USA, focusing on Henry Miller, and I reveal why I missed out on reading his books as a teenager.

  • #10: Being Victoria - with Natalie Midgley
    Aug 25 2022

This week, it was an absolute delight to welcome my old friend, Natalie Midgley, onto the podcast.

After reminiscing about the time we first met when we lived in Bicester, we travel back a little further to Natalie's wedding day. Although it's a day she would like to revisit, the method she chooses to do so is slightly different to the norm, but one that makes perfect sense.

We then reflect on darker moments, and how useful it might be if our older selves could revisit our younger selves to reassure them that it's all going to turn out fine.

Next, we remember Natalie's grandfather and reflect on the role that grandparents play in our lives.

For her travels back into history, Natalie imagines stepping into the shoes of Queen Victoria. What must it have been like to be her? We stay in this era for some more general musings on the Victorian Era - from the lows, such as infant mortality, to the highs, as we marvel at the great feats of 19th-century engineers.

Natalie has recently opened the Obsidian salon, offering all manner of treatments, including fat dissolving, something I could do with! Based in Doncaster, you can find out more about her business on Instagram, Tik Tok and Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nataliemidgleybeautytherapy

  • #09: Beer, Barracudas & Bond - with Duncan Elliott
    Aug 18 2022

Duncan Elliott, HR Consultant, travels into The Time Bubble this week, bringing us tales from five different decades.

We begin with the story of how a chance encounter on holiday in Mexico led to an interesting day out on a boat - with a further invitation to follow, but did Duncan take it up?

There is a sombre tone to the second story, where a question we have all asked ourselves at one time or another is raised. Could tragedy have been avoided if we had done anything differently, or was it out of our hands?

There's a more upbeat tone to the third day before we turn our attention to the work of the legendary Ian Fleming. What must it have been like to be Fleming, spending two months a year in Jamaica writing the Bond books?

Finally, we hear how one of Duncan's relatives played a key role in one of the turning points of the Second World War.

  • #08: Big Yellow Taxi - with Carbon Mike
    Aug 11 2022

Joining me this week, from New York City, is software engineer, social commentator and podcast host, Carbon Mike.

There is a musical flavour to the first part of the show, as Mike talks about the thrill of first picking up a guitar, followed some years later by an ambitious project to build an entire recording studio at home.

Next, we talk about a brief change of career when work in the software industry dried up and Mike turned his hand to driving that iconic symbol of New York, the yellow taxi, for a year or so.

Turning to history, we look back at the motivations of some of the key players in the Peasant's Revolt of 1381. Was it all a protest against excessive taxation, as we've always been taught, or was there more to it? Finally, we round off with a discussion about the achievements of the great Victorian engineers, in an era which is now seen as problematic, by some.
