About this listen

Your two hosts of this podcast work as professional guides in the Alaskan outdoor tourism industry and started this podcast as a fun way to keep busy during the pandemic summer of 2020. With uncertainty in what employment might look like, Danny and Andrew still wanted to share the beauty of Alaska with people and this podcast was a good way to achieve that goal. Alaska is an incredible place everybody should put on their destination bucket list. Each episode opens with a beer review highlighting a local Alaskan brewery and then tackles a different topic relating to what makes Alaska such a unique place in the world. With all the fun being had drinking Alaskan brews and sharing fascinating information about the Last Frontier State, what started as a fun short term project has morphed into a long term endeavor. With this decision, investments were made in much better production equipment and the sound quality drastically improves starting in Phase II of the podcast with Episode 17 (Feb 21, 2021 release date). We hope you enjoy the content and strongly encourage you to visit Alaska in the future!

  • Constellations of the Last Frontier
    Oct 12 2025

While difficult to see the stars during the summer months in the land of the midnight sun, winter stargazing is out of this world in the Last Frontier. Most places in Alaska have very little light pollution where it is easy to get away and enjoy the beautiful night sky. On today's episode, we discuss many of the constellations you can see in the Alaskan sky and some of the mythical stories behind them. How many constellations are there? How did a constellation asterism end up on the Alaska state flag? And what animals did Zeus turn into in order to seduce the ladies?! It's the episode you'll listen to under the stars!

  • Alaska Japan Connections
    Sep 28 2025

From indigenous origins to animal migrations to World War II, Alaska and Japan have been linked in a variety of ways going back to early human migration. Andrew and friend of the pod Jared recently visited the great country of Japan and we spend today's episode discussing the commonalities between the country of Japan and the Last Frontier State of Alaska. What is the Kelp Highway Hypothesis? Where was the only land battle on U.S. soil fought during World War II? And why are Japanese toilets amazing except when you have food poisoning?! It's the episode you'll be craving sake after!

  • Animal Intelligence
    Sep 14 2025

We have some pretty intelligent species up here in Alaska. One of our local researchers, Dan Olsen, has spent a considerable amount of time studying these animals with a specialty on the Killer Whale. Dan joins us on today's episode to delve into the topic of animal intelligence in the Last Frontier. What does a killer whale call sound like? How do things like environment, social structure, and migration affect intelligence? And why do killer whales go to the spa?! It's the episode that'll make you smarter!
