1. You have a debt that is not owned by the people who originated it. If you need to find out who owns your mortgage or car you can call the people taking your payments and ask them. You can also look on your credit report to see if the names match. If they don't your debt has been sold and you need to participate in this national inquiry. 2. Most of the time, loans that required you to give your SSN are going to be pooled. This includes your mortgage, car, and student loans; but can be any kind of loan.
