    Aug 27 2025

Our latest episode features an interview with Natalie Snee, co-founder of Daedalus, a creative advertising agency. They work with ambitious business owners to advertise, strategise, and promote their business to the right customers.

Natalie has achieved the fine balance of starting a business with her partner Jack, while also caring for her sick young child. We hear about how she juggles the priorities between business and family, and the boundaries she has introduced, given she works from home.

As always, we talked awards, something Natalie has not always been an advocate of. However, she was taken with the approach of the Best Businesswomen Awards. Therefore, she applied, and, as a result, has been shortlisted for Best Businesswoman in Marketing & PR 2025. She went on to explain what has deterred her from entering awards previously, and why she dislikes voting to select a winner.

Given her business is founded on branding and marketing, we discuss the rise of AI and the impact it is having. Nevertheless, Natalie is not afraid of it, in fact her business uses AI every day. Furthermore, she is confident that AI cannot replace human creativity and that it should be used as a tool just like any other.

As a branding expert, Natalie explains why using a professional to hone your brand is so important. As an illustration, she told us about the work Daedalus did for Golden Bear coffee, a luxury coffee brand. Needless to say, it also led to a coffee addiction!

Penny is dedicated to helping ambitious businesses raise their profile, win recognition, and achieve measurable growth. Her career spans more than 15 years in communications. As a result, she has worked across industries to deliver strategic campaigns that get brands noticed, talked about, and remembered.

During our conversation we discussed awards in depth, given they are at the heart of her expertise. Penny has been involved in every stage of the awards process — from planning her own awards, to judging categories, to writing, designing and mentoring many winning entries for clients. Her deep understanding of the awards process, combined with her creative storytelling skills, makes her one of the UK’s go-to experts for awards success. And in 2025 she has entered the Best Businesswomen Awards, being shortlisted as a finalist in two categories.

Furthermore, Penny explained why finalists in Businesswomen Awards can often get more PR than their male counterparts. She expanded by highlighting the growing number of women in the UK SME sector. Ultimately, Penny set up her business The Plattform to help businesses achieve wider reach. She stressed this was not just from award wins but in all areas of a business. The result: her business has grown rapidly over the last three years.

She went on to explain that not every small business can afford to outsource its PR and marketing. Therefore, Penny has created a solution by offering a mentor programme. Her first mentee, Tracy Fishburn, a former guest on the Show, has grown her business exponentially, and won multiple awards, thanks Penny's support.

This episode offers some fascinating insights into the world of Awards and how to succeed in them. Penny also provides common-sense advice about starting and running a business, and how anyone can create a sensible PR and marketing strategy with a little help.

  • Episode 158: Interview with Rani Sandhu
    Aug 13 2025
The latest episode of The Business Awards Show sees us meet Rani Sandhu, the owner of Ranmore Friery, a fish and chip shop in Sheffield. The conversation explored Rani's remarkable journey from a corporate career in banking to a celebrated local entrepreneur, a pillar of her community, and her inspiring experience on the Channel 5 show, "Faking It." Rani moved her family to Sheffield in 2016, a decision prompted by a series of personal challenges. Seeing an opportunity to take over her sister's fish and chip shop, the family, who had no prior experience in the food industry, decided to take a leap of faith. Discover how tough it was to learn how to run the shop whilst living in a one bed flat above. Despite that, the experience brought her family together. She talks of the unbreakable bond they have as a unit having gone through the journey together. The conversation then turned to her incredible experience on the Channel 5 show "Faking It." She was challenged to transform into a high-end sushi chef in London while undercover. Describing it as the "toughest thing I have ever done," she spent a month away from her family, working in acclaimed restaurants like Chotto Matte and Maru. Following the show, she introduced Poke bowls to her Sheffield shop, which have become a massive success, and she continues to receive support and mentorship from the chefs she worked with. Furthermore, Rani explained why she has continually diversified from pure fish and chips. 40% of her sales are now vegan options. We also talked about her fundraising efforts for Cavendish Cancer Care, a local charity. Her support was deeply motivated by personal loss after her mother sadly passed away from cancer. Movingly, her father started her off with a 500 Canadian dollar donation in her mother's memory. She has since grown that into over £10,000 raised for the charity. The podcast also revealed a heartwarming surprise. Unbeknown to Rani, her older sister, Julie Kaur, who also runs a successful business, is a finalist, like her, in the Best Businesswomen Awards. She credits her strong family work ethic, instilled by her entrepreneurial father, for their shared drive and success. In her closing advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, Rani encourages listeners to embrace change and not be afraid to step out of their comfort zones. "Life is for living. Live it," she urged, highlighting her own journey from knowing nothing about fish and chips or sushi to running a thriving, innovative food business. Her story is a powerful testament to the strength of family, the importance of community, and the incredible places a leap of faith can lead. {1:43} Transitioning from banking to fish and chips! {4:05} What drew Rani to run a fish and chip shop. {5:52} The effect of living in a one bed flat above the shop. {7:39} Taking on the business. {8:07} Introducing vegan options. {10:35} The challenges facing the fish and chips industry. {13:25} Being selected for and the experience of making Channel 5's 'Faking It'. {22:05} Being an Asian woman running a chip shop. {23:04} Applying for the Best Businesswomen Awards. {29:50} Rani's fundraising efforts for charity. {34:12} How to keep evolving. {35:20} Further additions to the shop menu. {36:43} Working with family and the lessons learnt. Aug 6 2025

The latest episode of the Business Awards Show features an interview with Tracey Barr, an independent strategy consultant. The insightful conversation charted the course of Tracey's impressive 40-year career, exploring her transition into entrepreneurship, her philosophy on networking, and her valuable experiences as both an awards judge and a published collaborator.

Founder of the Strategic Link, Tracey recounted her diverse professional journey, which began with a sponsored engineering degree from Ford and evolved into high-level strategy consulting. Working with prestigious firms like LEK and Arthur Andersen, she was instrumental in major projects, most notably the development and launch of the now-dominant UK property portal, Rightmove.

Twenty years ago, Tracey made the leap to independent consulting, establishing her firm as a specialist in healthcare strategy. She explained how she built her business in a pre-social media era, relying on a robust professional network, word-of-mouth referrals, and strategic associations with other firms like Eden McCallum. Tracey further emphasized that her approach to networking has always been about more than just business development; it’s about finding community and connecting with inspirational, like-minded women.

Drawing from her experience as a judge for both the Best Business Women Awards and the Funny Women Awards, Tracey offered critical advice for anyone seeking recognition. She went on to stress that while a compelling story is important, the key differentiator for a winning application is the inclusion of clear, tangible evidence to substantiate your claims. She observed that many excellent candidates fall short simply by failing to provide the necessary proof to back up their narrative, a crucial lesson for any aspiring award winner.
