  • Safe and Sound: Security Talk with Rachel Mahloch
    Sep 13 2024

Personal safety expert, Rachel Mahloch aka Battle Mom® is on a mission to combat violence by prioritizing women and leveraging state-of-the-art technology.

World Health Organization statistics reveal a grim reality: one in three women worldwide will, at some point in their lives, endure gender-based violence and aggression. The widespread prevalence of violence against women remains deeply entrenched and often accepted as a cultural norm. Rachel is dedicated to the crucial mission of challenging and ultimately changing this status quo, drawing from her own personal survival story of assault as an inspiring testament to her commitment.

She created an all-encompassing empowerment brand designed exclusively for women, emphasizing her unique philosophy. This method takes a holistic approach, integrating physical, mental, and verbal skills that can be harnessed effectively across diverse situations.

Rachel is an accomplished martial artist with a third-degree black belt in Kempo and a second-degree black belt in a hybrid Japanese jujitsu-based style. In addition to her impressive rank in these disciplines, she dedicates herself to training in Muay Thai, BJJ, Boxing, Kali, and Jeet Kune Do. Her passion for martial arts extends beyond her training, as she is currently an apprentice in the Rogue JKD instructorship program. This program not only hones her skills in unarmed and weapons combat but also provides valuable instruction in anger management, crisis communication, and situational awareness.

A Residence of Hope and Healing

Founded in 1980, The Beacon operates as a client-centered community living environment that supports adult women in central Iowa who have experienced trauma and systemic inequity. These social determinants of health often serve as the precursor for substance use and subsequent involvement with the criminal justice system. The Beacon's aim is to provide a supportive environment conducive to breaking this cycle in order for these women to live more satisfying, productive lives.

In February 2024, we added a second building: The Beacon Village! This former motel has been converted to 32 efficiency units for women who want to gain more autonomy while also living in a recovery environment.

    Our Mission

Our mission at The Beacon is to create an environment that empowers women in crisis to achieve positive long-term change.

  • Safe and Sound: Security Talk with Daryl Hill
    Aug 23 2024

Before first grade , DaryI went to what was known as the mentally handicapped school, but thanks to his mom she fought with the school board for him to attend regular school. You see Daryl had superpowers even back then that he didn’t realize, kind of like superman as a young boy did. He tended to see everything backwards and recognized things that others didn’t see. He never really gave it much thought but often times it was this edge that enabled him to anticipate the actions of his opponents whether it was on the football field or battlefields.

    From Daryl:

I believe that every business owner is capable of achieving their highest level of success without the struggle of the grind.

I believe your past doesn’t determine your future, it’s simply a map of where you’ve been. When you use the lessons you’ve learned, your past will propel you forward instead of chaining you down.

    Aug 21 2024

We envision a world without domestic violence.

By breaking our silence, we aim to create a world without domestic violence where every man, woman, and family can feel safe and protected.

    TARA WOODLEE

    PRESIDENT & CEO

Tara Woodlee is the President & CEO of Break the Silence Against Domestic Violence. Previously, she served as the Board President from 2018 - 2022.

In 2012 Tara lost her 20-year-old daughter, Ashleigh Lindsey, and her unborn granddaughter Patience Lynn to a brutal act of domestic violence that made national news. Tara shares the raw truth about domestic violence and gives audiences the opportunity to learn about the impact abuse has on families from generation to generation. Tara, also a survivor, describes the journey from victim to survivor and then the impact her story made on her family finding out thru the death of her child of a 100-year-old history of this cycle of abuse within her family. This knowledge led her to found an organization in her child and grandchild’s honor called the Ashleigh’s Patience Project. Through the pain, Tara has fought courts and is working to raise awareness and change laws not just across the nation but worldwide. Tara told Ashleigh’s story on Investigation’s Discovery Channel (Your Worst Nightmare) and was featured in an article in Cosmopolitan Magazine called Stop Calling It Domestic Violence It’s Intimate Terrorism, in the US.

The U.K. shared her tragic loss in magazines untitled Pick Me Up and Full House. Lastly, Ashleigh’s story is used in the Moving Forward resource that is to help young women identify the signs of domestic violence in their current or future relationships in Queensland Australia. Tara travels the country as a national speaker and Tara’s role in activism has been recognized through the Awarding of the Presidents Lifetime Service Award 2021.
