• Saving Throes # 120 - The Best Non-WotC D&D
    Aug 21 2025

Welcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a topic or theme along with my take on current happenings in the world of tabletop role-playing games and semi regular updates on the games I am currently involved with, or new games or products I have come across.

D&D as a game isn't really owned by any one company. While it is true that the brand name is indeed owned, the soul of the game is not. As such, there are plenty of flavours of D&D available that can accommodate pretty well anyone. Due to recent events and mis-steps from WotC & Hasbro, plenty of people prefer not to play the "official" brand of D&D. I thought that it would be good to talk about all the D&D that is still available to the community and discuss the more notable ones. To be clear, I am not talking about those games that deviate too far from the core mechanics of D&D; so no games that use 2D12 instead of a D20 or feature prominent player facing combat. While there is nothing wrong with these games, I want to talk about the games that aim to invoke very clearly, the soul of D&D. Tune in to hear what games I mention and see if there is something in there that might pique your curiosity.

  • Pining for Pixels # 120 - The Top 100: #94 - Mortal Kombat
    Aug 19 2025

Welcome to the Pining For Pixels podcast! This is my video game variety show podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a subject or theme that interests me, and I will speak about what is on my mind in the world of video games!

For # 94 of the top 100 games of all time, I place the original Mortal Kombat as the official selection. This arcade game was born out of the massive success of the arcade fighting game scene after the rise of Street Fighter 2. Mortal Kombat kept that sensation going keeping huge crowds around arcade cabinets. The crowd was there as much to play and put up their quarter on the cabinet to secure the next fight as they were to simply gawk at the outlandish violence they had heard about! Mortal Kombat not only successfully launched a massively successful franchise, but also stirred the pot of concerned parents and politicians, which is the reason we have the ESRB and ratings on our games today. Tune in to hear about the origins of this bone fide classic and marvel at how a game this tame by todays standards rocked the boat in popular culture, transforming the video game landscape forever.

  • Saving Throes # 119 - The Lost D&D Rules
    Aug 14 2025

Welcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a topic or theme along with my take on current happenings in the world of tabletop role-playing games and semi regular updates on the games I am currently involved with, or new games or products I have come across.

This week I am going over some D&D rules that were larger parts of prior editions that have either changed drastically or no longer exist at all. Some of these rules were very much informed by how the game was played, such as in the early days of the hobby, and some were just interesting ideas that never took hold for one reason or another. This isn't an exhaustive look at all the rules that have changed or disappeared, as there are so many long lost or altered rules to talk about. Instead this is just a small sample of some interesting rules I wanted to focus on and determine if we are better off without them today. Tune in to potentially learn about some very old concepts in the game, for instance, who is the caller at your table?

    Aug 12 2025

Welcome to the Pining For Pixels podcast! This is my video game variety show podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a subject or theme that interests me, and I will speak about what is on my mind in the world of video games!

Nintendo has always been an eccentric company. Later this week, one of their more unusual games will be released with Drag X Drive. This has inspired me to look at the 5 most unusual creations they have released in the modern era. Specifically I am looking from the Wii era to the present for their consoles, and the 3DS to present from their handhelds. If I was to include more than that from their past, then this podcast would be several hours long! Tune in to hear if the Nintendo games and creations you think are weird made it into my top 5, and if they didn't, then please let me know what I missed!

I can't believe Gen Con has already come and gone for another year! I think I say that every year. Gen Con arrives and you have 4 days of gaming in front of you, and in a flurry of activity, it feels like it is over in a mere flash. This year was certainly a big year again, I got to try a few new games that have previously eluded me, there was another 50 year milestone in the TTRPG industry to celebrate, and of course lots of announcements. Tune in to hear what the most memorable moments of Gen Con 2025 were for me, and what one surprising event was unexpectedly quite a let down.

Each episode will feature a topic or theme along with my take on current happenings in the world of tabletop role-playing games and semi regular updates on the games I am currently involved with, or new games or products I have come across.

Another Gen Con is upon us. As I am attending, this episode is another interview/discussion with my friend Marc that was recorded earlier. We had a similar discussion last year for Gen Con, but so much has happened since last year's show - the revised 5e release for D&D, the departure of many regular staffers at WotC, the proliferation of other games that are making noise, or continue to do so in ShadowDark's case, and of course the 50th anniversary milestone of D&D passing. we talk about all the changes we have seen, and look forward to our trip. We compare what events we each have and I note my jealousy about one of the events Marc managed to get! Tune in to hear what events or elements of Gen Con we are most looking forward to and which one made me jealous.

  • Pining for Pixels # 117 - Evercade Expeditions: Windjammers, Karnov & Friends

Time for a new Evercade Expedtions where I provide a cart overview! This cart just came out, and while I was looking forward to it, I was a little confused on what the theme was supposed to be for this one. It seemed to me that these were a bunch of unrelated titles thrown together for good measure. However, as I learned after receiving it, these titles were all at one time released by Data East, but none of them are owned by Data East any longer. The way I see it, this is an unofficial new entry in the Data East collections! Tune in to hear which of the titles included that I had never played prior to this cart and why it impressed me so much!
