  • Stealing Copper
    Dec 24 2025

Getting into the festive spirit this week on Ordinary Observations we express a little admiration for the creative lengths some clever people are willing to go to in order to steal a little copper. We discuss a recent spate of theft committed right here in Gothenburg, by a gang dressed up as roadworkers. We look back at an illegitimate German demolition crew who once made off with four kilometres worth of railroad. And we consider how a few Romanian fraudsters committed the "Theft of the Year" back in 2018. All this packaged up with a few laughs, this week on Ordinary Observations.

  • Cheating on Exams
    Dec 6 2025

This week Jack is once again joined by long time friend of the show Manoj to discuss a few fun stories of people trying to cheat on their exams. We start off with an odd excuse for a man to refuse revealing what's in his hand during a Swedish driving theory test. We catch up with a few would-be teachers wearing very expensive flip flops in Rajasthan. And we make a smash and grab attempt at stealing a possible illegitimate exam paper at the University of Otago in New Zealand. All this and a handful of laughs this time on Ordinary Observations!

  • Time Zone Curiosities
    Oct 29 2025

This week on Ordinary Observations we stop the clocks and take a timely look at a history of time zones. How did we get here? Short answer: The steam locomotive. Listen in to hear the long answer and how ultimately it all ends in a personal anecdote of Jack missing a football match. We also discuss a few strange time zones from around the globe, and attempt an explanation as to how the International Date Line got that bug hook it in. I promise you'll learn something, this time on Ordinary Observations.

  • More Common Misconceptions
    Oct 14 2025

Leaning right into the leftover show notes from the last K103 Live Day, Jack is back this week to discuss a bunch more common misconceptions from the depths of science, culture, and history. Is the caesarian section really named after Julius Caesar? Does cutting an earthworm in half really make two worms? Will gum be stuck inside your stomach for seven years if you swallow it? Once again, the short answer to all these questions is a simple NO - but listen along for a few adjacent stories and a handful of laughs, this time on Ordinary Observations.

  • Common Misconceptions
    Oct 5 2025

This episode is taken from K103 Live Day where Jack is joined by long time friends of the show Erik, Eddie, and Josefine. Doing our part in the battle against an ever-rising tide of misinformation, we take a cold, sarcastic look at some of the most common misconceptions from the realms of science, culture, and history. Do bulls really hate the colour red? Do carrots really help you see in the dark? Should you really pee on a jellyfish sting? Short answer NO - but listen along for a few adjacent stories and a handful of laughs, this time on Ordinary Observations.

  • Weird News You Might Have Missed Summer 2025
    Sep 17 2025

This week Jack finally returns from his lengthy summer holidays to discuss a few bizarre bits of recent news we all fear you might have missed. First off a Danish Zoo makes quite a stir with an interesting request, secondly a UK doctor falls from grace in a rather undignified fashion, and finally Vladimir Putin's rather particular bathroom habits. Find out what on earth we are talking about this time on Ordinary Observations.

  • Roadside Gigantism
    Jul 2 2025

This week on Ordinary Observations Jack is joined by long time friend of the show, Bosnian affairs correspondent, and K103 Chairperson, Elvira Hodzic! We have a long, winding discussion about the joys of large roadside attractions, built by enterprising folks trying to encourage ordinary passers by to stay a little longer in their small towns. We start off with a low pass over the Big Chicken in Marietta, Georgia. An enormous local landmark which somehow acts as both KFC advertisement and an unofficial waypoint to commercial pilots flying overhead. Next up, Elvira discusses the history of the ICAR Canned Beef Monument in Sarajevo. Perhaps a genuine display of gratitude, perhaps a sarcastic dig at the quality of 'aid' sent to Bosnia by the UN, hard to say for sure. A little closer to home, Jack admires the Mjölbypotäten, a giant potato placed in a roundabout near the Swedish town of Mjölby. It's good. Then we wrap it all up with a quick fire collection of large stuff in Casey, Illinois, an otherwise forgettable town famous for having no less than 12 of the world's largest things. All this and a handful of laughs this week on Ordinary Observations!

  • Bad Off-Field Behaviour
    Jun 18 2025

This week on Ordinary Observations, Jack is joined by long time friend of the show, holder of a master's degree in economics, and brother - Bryn. We get into the nitty gritty of a few of our favourite sportspeople making questionable decisions off the pitch. From bathroom incident that ruined Todd Carney's NRL career, to the browsing behaviour of New Zealand middle distance running champion Nick Willis. We also take a look at all time great Australian spin bowler Shane Warne's love of sex and cigarettes, and question how did American goalkeeper Hope Solo find herself on the wrong side of the law? All this and a few laughs for measure, this time on Ordinary Observations.
