• SF Giants' Bullpen Steps Up Big; Hayden Birdsong to Debut Tonight
    Jun 26 2024
The San Francisco Giants' pitching staff has been decimated by injuries. So much so that the Giants were forced to go with back-to-back bullpen games in their first two games against the Cubs. Despite the dire situation, with the team mired in a five-game losing streak, the Giants won both games. Last night, the bullpen was absolutely stellar as they held the Cubs to just one run. Help is on the way, however, in the form of right-handed pitching prospect Hayden Birdsong, who's set to make his MLB debut tonight in the third game of this four-game series against the Cubs. Birdsong has risen quickly through the Giants' system and arrives as one of the club's top pitching prospects. In other news, the SF Giants shuffled their pitching staff slightly ahead of last night's game. Right-hander Mason Black was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento, and lefty Raymond Burgos was optioned just one day after being added to the 40-man roster and selected to the Giants.Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…🎧 https://link.chtbl.com/LOSFGiants?sid=YouTubeLocked On MLB League-Wide: Every Team, Prospects & More🎧 https://linktr.ee/LockedOnMLBThe best daily San Francisco Giants podcast. • SF Giants Rally Late, Win One for Willie Mays
    Jun 25 2024

The San Francisco Giants, losers of five straight, badly needed a win. It was the Giants' first home game since last week's passing of Willie Mays, and as expected, the Giants put together a moving pregame celebration. All SF Giants also wore the No. 24 in Mays' honor.

Despite all that, the Giants fell behind 4-0 to the Cubs and looked to be headed to a sixth straight loss. But solo homers by Matt Chapman and Nick Ahmed brought the Giants closer, and Spencer Howard was excellent in relief, holding the Cubs scoreless.

In the bottom of the 9th, the SF Giants rallied for three runs to defeat the Cubs. There were huge hits up and down the lineup, and the winning run scored on Wilmer Flores' walk-off walk. In addition to discussion about last night's game, a number of key injury updates are provided.

  • Reeling SF Giants Must Play Better—Now
    Jun 24 2024

The San Francisco Giants were riding high one game into their six-game road trip against two teams they are directly competing with in the wild card race. Thairo Estrada hit a huge, ninth-inning three-run homer to give the SF Giants the lead and eventually the win. But after that, the Giants dropped their next five games and lost the legendary Willie Mays who passed away last Tuesday at the age of 93.

The Giants' five-game skid leaves them with the third-worst record in the NL, which should be unacceptable for this team. However, much of the SF Giants' struggles can be linked to the fact that they've been ravaged by injuries, particularly in the starting rotation. The eventual return of several key starters could position the Giants for a strong second-half run. They just need to stay afloat in the meantime.

One other issue that's become glaring in recent weeks has been the Giants' insane stolen base differential. Teams are running wild on Giants pitchers, despite Patrick Bailey being elite with his pop times. Meanwhile, the SF Giants are not stealing bases, leaving with by far the largest negative stolen base differential in MLB. It's a problem that must be addressed, but one that may be hard to fix mid-season.

  • SF Giants Legend Willie Mays Dies at 93
    Jun 20 2024
The San Francisco Giants, all of baseball, and truly the world at large lost a legend on Tuesday. Willie Mays, perhaps the greatest baseball player who ever lived, passed away peacefully at the age of 93. Mays was beloved from coast to coast and from generation to generation. His death came just two days before he was set to be honored in a game played by the Giants at Rickwood Field, where Mays' pro career began at the age of 16. Mays is gone but his legacy will truly be felt forever. Meanwhile, the SF Giants had baseball still to play, and unfortunately they lost the last two games of their series against the Cubs in Chicago. Logan Webb was great but in the middle game but the Giants' offense couldn't muster much, whereas Jorge Soler's eighth-inning grand slam pulled the Giants to within one in the finale but San Francisco fell a run shy. Now, all eyes turn to Rickwood Field where the Giants will play the St. Louis Cardinals. Rickwood Field is the oldest pro baseball stadium in the nation, and it's located in Birmingham, Alabama, where Mays was born. Mays made his pro debut playing for Rickwood Field's Birmingham Black Barons, and Mays' passing makes what was already a special event even more of a spectacle in his honor.Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…🎧 https://link.chtbl.com/LOSFGiants?sid=YouTubeLocked On MLB League-Wide: Every Team, Prospects & More🎧 https://linktr.ee/LockedOnMLBThe best daily San Francisco Giants podcast. • SF Giants Win Thriller Behind Thairo Estrada's Dramatic 9th-Inning HR
    Jun 18 2024

In perhaps the San Francisco Giants' most dramatic win of the season, Thairo Estrada blasted a go-ahead, three-run home run in the ninth inning with the Giants down by two runs. The SF Giants and Cubs exchanged blows late in the game, but the Giants ultimately prevailed thanks to Estrada's blast.

The Giants also exhibited strong defense (and more offensive pyrotechnics) earlier in the game. Michael Conforto and Mike Yastrzemski had big outfield assists, and Heliot Ramos and Patrick Bailey hit homers. The Giants needed all the offense they could muster on a night when the home plate umpire had perhaps the worst performance by a home-plate umpire all season.

In the bottom of the ninth, with the SF Giants clinging to a one-run lead, Camilo Doval was summoned to preserve the lead after having several shaky outings recently, including one the previous day. Doval got the benefit of a very generous 2-0 pitch to the leadoff batter and rebounded to have a 1-2-3 ninth to secure a huge win for the Giants.

  • SF Giants' Heliot Ramos Having Legitimate Breakout Season
    Jun 17 2024

It's quickly becoming by far the best story of the 2024 season for the San Francisco Giants. Heliot Ramos, drafted out of high school as a teenager, is finally breaking out at the major-league level before our very eyes. Ramos, given a chance to play everyday due to injuries in the outfield, has been on a tear for over a month and it's getting harder and harder to ignore the legitimacy of the SF Giants outfielder's breakout.

Despite Ramos' breakout, the Giants lost two of three to the inferior Angels, largely due to poor situational hitting in the middle game of the series. Another negative for the San Francisco Giants was the continued struggles of Camilo Doval, who was touched up for four runs in 1/3 of an inning in Sunday's blowout win. It's starting to look like a change at the closer position is warranted, with the dominant Ryan Walker the most likely solution.

Meanwhile, Giants starter Kyle Harrison landed on the 15-day IL after spraining his ankle in the weight room on Saturday. It was another blow for a Giants rotation that has been banged up all season. In Harrison's place, Spencer Bivens made his MLB debut following opener Erik Miller, and Bivens was very impressive over three innings en route to his first MLB win.

  • Inbox: Has SF Giants' Offense Been Bad, Good, Or In Between?
    Jun 15 2024

There seems to be a commonly held belief that the San Francisco Giants' offense has been bad so far in 2024. But is it really true? The Giants boast an above-average wRC+, and they're above average in batting average and on-base percentage. Their power has been subpar, and their hitting with runners in "scoring position" has been bottom five in the league, but numbers like wRC+ are more indicative of talent and predictive of future performance. The Giants are a tick below average in runs scored per game. At worst, they're mediocre, not bad.

Among the other questions asked and answered on today's mailbag edition of Locked On Giants:

Do the Giants have enough offense to get it done this season?

Corresponding moves once Nick Ahmed and LaMonte Wade Jr. can come back?

When does Hayden Birdsong debut? Does Hunter Bishop get up this year?

When will the SF Giants get to and stay above .500? Also, is it time for a new closer?

  • Inbox: Should the SF Giants Trade for Bo Bichette?
    Jun 14 2024
If the San Francisco Giants could acquire Bo Bichette in exchange for Marco Luciano and Carson Whisenhunt, should they do it? That mailbag question and many others are discussed on today's edition of the Locked On Giants podcast, including: What do you think about Heliot Ramos’ hot streak, specifically how likely it is he maintains his strong plate presence? How will his role change in a seasons time when our roster is back to healthy? Trade possibilities? If Brett Wisely is still hitting like he is, and making the routine plays at SS, when Nick Ahmed is ready to come back, do you think they stick with Wisely till he falters, or will Ahmed assume his starting role no matter what? Melvin appeared to be in Wisely’s camp in postgame comments. I have a take that the Giants are the 3rd most talented roster in the NL? Am I right? Austin Slater has put together a couple of good offensive performances since returning. How many games/ABs do you give him until deciding to stick with him or call up Luis Matos? Do you believe Robbie Ray can make any realistic impact this year?
