The A’s handed the ball to rookie Mason Barnett for his much-anticipated major league debut, and let’s just say the Rangers weren’t interested in being polite. Barnett lasted four innings, giving up five runs on eight hits, a line that screams “welcome to The Show.” It wasn’t all bad news for the green and gold—Brent Rooker and Lawrence Butler each went yard—but the damage was already done. Merrill Kelly, making his second straight sharp outing for Texas, kept the A’s offense mostly quiet, and the Rangers claimed game two of the series with authority.

That means the Rangers have already secured the series win, taking the first two games in Sacramento. For the A’s, the night was another lesson in growing pains, as a promising young arm took his first lumps at the highest level. The offense showed flashes, but once again it wasn’t enough to counter Texas’ balanced attack. Now the A’s will look to salvage something in the finale, hoping to avoid the sweep and get Barnett’s debut in the rearview mirror.
