Every week, Leading You showcases leadership of all kinds and you get the scoop on how to be an effective, modern leader who makes an impact.

There’s one thing we all have in common. We’re all leaders. First and foremost, you’re a leader of you. You don’t need a title to be a leader. Leadership is a mindset which anyone can adopt to create influence. The more leaders the world has, the better it will be.

I'll let you into something I know to be true - You can’t be a leader of others unless you’re a leader of self first. So if you want to have impact that leads to prosperity and happiness, it all starts with you. With your mindset and personal leadership toolbox, which Leading You will help you build up.

Leading you is hosted by Julie Hyde, an entrepreneur, corporate drop out and passionate leader. Julie knows one thing: you can’t control what happens to you but you can control how you respond. It’s why Leading You is important.

Each week, guests share their secret sauce. They reveal their roadmaps to success. How they’ve stayed anchored to who they are, insights into their courage and resilience and how to be emotionally and behaviourally agile. It’s a conversation, not an interrogation, and you’ll hear the human side of household names.

As a leadership coach and author, I have encountered countless clients who struggle with this issue. In fact, it is one of the most common resolutions people make at the start of each year – to stop being so busy.

In this episode, I share with you the 8 different types of busy that I have identified and which I discuss in my book, You Always Have a Choice. By understanding how you do busy, you’ll be able to gain the self-awareness needed to break free from the vortex of busyness.

    The 8 Types of Busy:

    1. The Comfort Zoner
    2. The Dramatic
    3. The Badge of Honour
    4. The Disorganised
    5. The Snapper
    6. FOMO
    7. The Control Freak
    8. The People Pleaser

Any of these look familiar to you? Well, if you’re like me, you might resonate with more than one at any given time. I’ll take you through each type of busy and discuss the patterns and behaviours that often come with it. I encourage you to embrace strategies such as delegation, saying no when necessary and prioritising self-care to combat the effects of your type of busy.

So, take a moment to reflect on your own busy habits and start making small changes today. Remember, nothing changes unless you change it!

  • How Digging into Your Resilience Can Reshape Your Story with Jo Gaines
    Aug 13 2023

Today I’m joined by the wonderful and inspiring Jo Gaines, a seasoned professional who has worked in the technology and media sector for over two decades. Jo's career journey has seen her work for high-profile companies including CBS, Krux, Yahoo and more recently, as Area Vice President of Salesforce. Jo is also a dedicated mother-of-two and a fierce advocate for equality, lending her support as an ambassador for women's shelters. She shares with us her journey through hardship to finding resilience and how changing her mindset helped reshape her story.

Through facing a challenging turning point in her career due to redundancy, Jo embarked on a transformative journey of self-discovery that saw her turn to practices such as weight training, breathwork and meditation. She shares the new mindset she adopted through these practices, and how her determination to thrive in the face of uncertainty led to a completely new outlook on life.

In our conversation, Jo shares the grief she experienced when her role at Salesforce came to an end, and how lost she felt when it came to her future. However, she notes there are two choices we can make when it comes to facing adversity. Either we can see it as a downfall, or treat it as an opportunity to expand. Jo chose the latter, and decided to view this new path as one she was destined to be on.

Resilience can often be misunderstood as a suppression of emotions or ignoring our problems. However, we define what resilience really is and discuss its ability to help effectively manage our thoughts and feelings. Jo believes that releasing control and trusting everything will eventually work out can free us from fear and the temptation to give up.

We talk about how navigating through our own life challenges produces empathy, and when we view others through this lens, we become more effective leaders. Recognising that everyone experiences change, particularly in a post-pandemic world, we’re able to rally with our team and prioritise their wellbeing. How can we communicate in a way that resonates for each individual? How do we lead in a way that not only gets them through, but also builds resilience?

Jo also shares her shift in perspective that inspired her to live more fully in the present and pursue the passions that had been sitting on the backburner for too long. She talks about the bucket list she created and the importance of making time and space in life to achieve each goal.

Jo's story is a powerful testament to the transformation resilience can create, and the potential for growth when we embrace change with gratitude. I just know you’ll be as inspired as I was by Jo’s incredible wisdom, and hope you find confidence to implement strategies for a full and rewarding life in leadership and beyond.

  • A Lady on a Mission to Give All Australian Women Dignity with Rochelle Courtenay
    Feb 5 2024

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to not have access to basic sanitary items during your period? Unfortunately for many women in Australia facing homelessness, this is an awful reality, and one that is often overlooked by the wider society.

In this episode, I sit down with Rochelle Courtenay, AKA ‘Pad Lady’, who is on a mission to give all Australian women dignity. Throughout our conversation, Rochelle shares what inspired the noble cause of providing homeless women with sanitary items. She talks about the force of the campaign she led to remove GST from all period products in Australia, and encourages us to use our own voices to make a positive change in our world.

Rochelle is the founder and managing director of Share the Dignity, a national charity founded in 2015 with the mission to ensure that everyone is afforded the dignity in life that so many of us take for granted. She has received numerous accolades for her work, including Finalist of Australian of the Year, Cosmopolitan Humanitarian of the Year and Pride of Australia. With her charity drive It’s In The Bag, Rochelle and her network of volunteers have now collected 4.4 million packets of period products for disadvantaged women.

We hear about Rochelle’s own childhood being plagued with domestic violence, and how this has given her the empathy and insight into the struggles of the women she aims to support. We discuss the importance of breaking down the stigma surrounding menstruation and creating a supportive environment for all women.

While Rochelle’s drive and ability to make a difference in women’s lives is awe-inspiring, she attributes the success of her efforts to the power of teamwork. This made itself abundantly clear when on 1 January 2019, with over 100,000 signatures on a federal petition led by Rochelle, the government removed GST from all period products in Australia.

Rochelle’s story is incredibly moving, and I know you’ll find her an inspiration as you endeavour to make your world a better place. So join me today and hear how you can take action, raise your voice and be a part of ending period poverty.
