  • Dons are Jammin': Bootcamping with Del Mar High School
    Dec 5 2024

This week's episode looks back to Early October when we had the inaugural Journalism class from Del Mar High School visit for a bootcamp. Well, they thought they were having a day out, but they got a bootcamp. We put these kids to work! The Campus tour became a fact finding mission so they could write headlines and teasers later in the day, they experienced print and broadcast and immersed in all the good stuff that we do on the Journalism program. Join me as I chat to their teacher, Jessica Olamit, and three of the students - Sophia, Maya and Luna - who were super stoked about the day. We also touch on a new idea we are launching - an internship scheme where JMC students mentor the J-class at Del Mar over a semester. Is this a pipeline? At the very least it's the start of a great partnership between SJSU and one of our local High Schools.

  • Reelin' in the Jams: Bruce Woodward and the Lost Box of TV Reels
    Oct 23 2024

This week's Jams turns the focus on our Advertising program as we invite Bruce Woodward, Ad '75, into the studio. As he was finishing his studies right here in DBH 50 years ago (nearly), Bruce saved a box of TV Commercial reels from the dumpster. These were ad agency reels from the 60s into the 70s. Some brands are still around, some aren't, and they were all produced right here in the Bay Area. Fast forward and Bruce is donating these as a "Gift in Kind" to the program. They are priceless artifacts of Pop Culture history and we are going to digitize them and produce an interactive documentary that will immortalize the period - the Golden Age of Advertising - and our relationship with it.

Join us as Bruce jams advertising, reels and Spartan life.

  • Awarding the Jam: Bob Regan, Operation Song and the Hearst Award
    Oct 15 2024

One of the most important weeks in the JMC calendar is Hearst Award Week. The Randolph William Hearst Foundation honors excellence in journalism and during this week we welcome our Hearst Award Honoree, this year it's Bob Regan, on to campus and a bunch of activities happen in DBH.

Bob Regan, founder of Operation Song, led some of or MCOM classes, held press conferences with our student media, met and greeted, and was awarded the Hearst Award for Outstanding Contributions to the industry. As well as all that, he still found time to come and jam with us on the podcast.

Come and see/hear Bob and I jammin' about Operation Song. Operation Song® empowers veterans, active-duty military members, and their families to tell their stories through the process of songwriting. Those we serve need no musical or writing skills, only a willingness to share their stories and, with the help of professional songwriters, transform them into song.

  • G'day Jams: SJSU x SUT, a Trans-Pacific Creative Jam Coming Soon
    Oct 8 2024

An almost off-the-cuff episode. Rowena Ulbrick from Swinburne University in Australia was in town today and we worked on the planning stage of a soon-to-be-revealed Creative Jam. The Jam is a collaborative effort between us and Swinburne where we'll ask student teams to solve a problem and create a product using generative AI. This will happen in the Spring. Rowena and I chat about the relationship between SUT and SJSU, the Jam and how study abroad as well as international collaborations can add so much value to your experiences at university.

Watch this space for a call-for-entries soon.
