Hey Artists! It’s Kristi here, and today I’m going to teach you how to start an art business.

I’m so excited about this topic because there is so much I can teach you. If you're like me, when people used to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would tell them I wanted to be an artist. And so it was. Drawing and painting is what I’m good at. It is something that I have a unique God-given gift and talent for. Ever since I was young, if I had spare time, I wanted to be drawing and painting. How about you? Have you dreamed of having an art business, where you could do work you loved and get paid well to do it?

Then you came to the right place. There are three things needed in order to have a thriving art business. First, what is something you love to do? Second, what are you great at? And third, is it something that people are willing to pay for?

A lot of artists are confused about what it means to be a paid artist, so let’s start with the definition of artist: a person who creates art (such as painting, sculpture, music or writing) using conscious skill and creative imagination.

Let’s say an artist loves to draw and paint, just for the sake of creating. But if this artist is not good at it, or does not desire to get paid for it then there is no reason to start an art business. One simple way to clarify what you are good at is to ask 3-5 family members or friends what they think you're great at. You may be surprised at their insight.

Now let’s say an artist loves to draw and paint, and is really good at it, but does not desire to get paid for it. Still there is no reason to start an art business because the third element is missing from the equation.

Lastly, let’s say an artist loves to draw and paint, is really good at it and desires to get paid well for it. This is the scenario of an artist who should start an art business. The key factor in any art business is the desire to solve a problem for a paying customer. It’s the desire to excel at your craft and make something that others want to buy. This takes a little humility and a ton of compassion and empathy. Create something and then ask others what they would be willing to pay for it, or research others who are already selling a similar item.

I was fortunate enough to have gone to a commercial art school, got my first job as a graphic artist and at the age of 26 I started my own art business called Art-N-Sign. We helped people starting a business to get noticed with a sign. We created everything from logos, to signs, to vehicle graphics. I was doing something that I loved and was great at and got paid well to do it.

What type of an art business do you want to start? There are so many different options available, but let’s say you want to start an art business where you sell paintings. First, we know you love to draw and paint. Perfect. Second, are you good at it? Have you developed your style of painting? Great! What product or service will people pay you for?

Here are three steps to help you start an art business:

Step 1: Decide what it is you love to do. What is something you would love to jump out of bed and keep pursuing day after day?

Step 2: What are you great at? What is something that you get complimented on? Don’t just shrug it off, take it seriously. It may be natural to you, but others marvel at your ability. What is it?

Step 3: What are people willing to pay you for? Is your product or service excellent? What problem are you solving? Who is your ideal audience?
