    Remigration Rising: When Deportation Moves from Ethics to Ethnic Bias

    Remigration, the policy of deporting individuals based on their assessed right to live in a country, is increasingly being framed in the rhetoric of populist parties in Europe and North America. For some, it can be taken as a code word for targeting people based on ethnicity who aren’t seen by those detaining and deporting them as fitting their view of what is to be a fellow citizen based on race or appearance. A number of those who maintain this view subscribe to the “Great Replacement” theory, that suggests white populations in some populations are being deliberately targeted by immigration aimed at replacing them. Calls for remigration are increasingly being heard in the public space, while much of what is happening behind closed doors, some potentially influenced or funded by governments, remains unknown beyond occasional reports that hint at policies that come close to crossing the line of “normal” migration controls. In this episode, we take a look at this disturbing possibility, as always turning to see where our prayers and intentions may be needed. Suggested Intention Focus for this week This week, as we reflect on the disturbing rise in support for remigration in the US and Europe, we suggest holding as our main intention: We will that the voices of far-right advocates in support of remigration will be balanced by clear warnings to people to recognize and resist its potential shaping of mainstream political policy, eroding of asylum protections, and expanding the space for governments to favor mass deportation over considerate and dignified treatment of all people, including those seeking asylum.     As both the USA and UK approach important anniversaries in the coming weeks–250 years of independence from Britain stateside, and 10 years on from the decision to go independent from Europe on the UK side of the pond–this week, we check out what we think of each other. This week, Ellen is our eyes on the ground stateside as our eyes on the ground as Clive seeks to see whether ideas that many Britons hold about life in the USA are really true. Fasten your seat belts, as we cover a lot of ground–everything from what it’s like to be sick and poor, to a love for trademarks, to whether there’s still strong support for capital punishment. As we know, getting to the truth is important when setting intentions around what’s going on in the news.
