Contentment may be one of the hardest attitudes for a believer to maintain. We know we are saved by grace and blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ, yet circumstances, financial pressures, hardships, and the constant desire for more can easily steal our peace. Paul wrote that “godliness with contentment is great gain.” But what does biblical contentment actually mean? Does God promise to give believers everything they desire—or does Scripture teach us to rest in His sufficiency? In this Bible study, Scott examines Paul’s teaching on contentment, God’s provision, giving, and the danger of covetousness. We look at why “the love of money” rather than money itself is the root of all evil, and why God’s promise to supply our needs should never be confused with the prosperity message of material wealth. Paul knew both abundance and suffering. He was hungry, imprisoned, beaten, supported by fellow believers, and at other times left in need. Yet through those circumstances, he learned to say: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” — Philippians 4:13 That familiar verse takes on greater meaning when read in its proper context. Paul had learned how to abound and how to suffer need because his strength did not depend upon his circumstances. We also consider Paul and Silas praising God from prison, Paul’s thorn in the flesh, and the Lord’s answer to him: “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” Contentment does not mean we will never experience hardship or desire better circumstances. It means learning to trust God’s provision, yield our will to His, give thanks in every circumstance, and set our affection on things above rather than the temporary things of this earth. Scriptures referenced: 1 Timothy 6:3–10; 2 Corinthians 9:6–11; Philippians 4:10–19; Genesis 37:23–27; Exodus 2:16–22; Leviticus 10:19–20; Proverbs 6:34–35; Acts 16:19–25; 2 Corinthians 12:7–10; Hebrews 13:5–6; Ephesians 5:15–21; Colossians 3:1–17 Key question: Are we content with God supplying our need here on earth while our affection, hope, and eternal riches remain above?
