About this listen

It’s uncomfortable, it’s awkward and I don’t want to talk about this. Conversations with people about the stuff we don’t really talk about, whether we want to or not. Whether I want to or not which probably means I should.Jojo Brown Relationships Social Sciences

This conversation comes with a trigger warning - we discuss one woman's experience in and around domestic violence. Please, if you feel you could be triggered, skip on.

Every 30s, the police receive a call regarding Domestic violence in England and Wales. 25% of women will experience DV in their lifetime. DV can lead to depression, homelessness, and suicide. 41% of girls ages between 14-17 will experience sexual violence in some form (Refuge).

The facts are staggering but, sadly, not surprising. I'm so grateful to have got to have this conversation, to challenge my own thinking and understand that leaving a DV situation doesn't mean the experience ends there - especially when there's children involved!

So my ask is to listen with compassion and empathy rather than any kind of 'I would have done this' type judgement. It's easy to zoom out when you're not 'in it'.

  • Is it really giving up?
    Feb 27 2025

I sat on this conversation for just over a year. I left it feeling a little uncomfortable and I wasn't sure why. Perhaps it was the vulnerability so clearly on display?

Eventually I returned to this conversation and listened again and I wasn't uncomfortable this time, I was left feeling like people could be potentially screaming at their device telling her to value herself more, perhaps RUN!

This is a conversation about going from being in-love to just love. Is it enough to sustain a relationship? How do maintain intimacy when you've been reduced down to what essentially is a parent?

So my ask is to listen with compassion and empathy rather than cold judgement. It's easy to see the wider picture when you're not 'in it'.

  • Can you do communication?
    Jan 24 2025

Seriously, I'll scream if I read one more dating profile that says 'looking for open communication'. Slight exaggeration but WHAT DOES THAT EVEN LOOK LIKE TO YOU?

Can you even do the bit where you have to receive that communication and respond? OR are you stuck at the verbalising your own needs part?

A different style of just me rambling my thoughts with a sprinkling of stories in there because I needed to get it out of my brain and what better things to do when you're procrastinating on other things.

    Enjoy.
