The four main points of the compass – North, South, East and West – are known as the Cardinal Points.

The word cardinal is derived from the Latin term "cardo". In the Roman empire, the Cardo Maximus referred to the main street running through the center of the city in a north to south orientation. The cardo was the "hinge" or axis of the city.

Of primary importance was the North point because everything else was derived from this bearing. Some common sayings that have this concept at their origin include "of cardinal importance" to emphasize a critical point, or when a person has “lost their north” to describe someone who is struggling.

    Cardinal Life Points

This is a powerful concept that we can apply to our lives to ensure that we don’t, “lose our north” and that we remain grounded in our core principles. While the compass has four cardinal points, in our lives we have five. And each has a major impact on our success, happiness and joy. Throughout life, we may be focused on one of these areas more than the others, but each requires careful and consistent nurturing if we want to reach our full potential.
