About this listen

Welcome to Forgotten Cinema! Each episode, Mike Field and Mike Butler highlight a film that for a variety of reasons was forgotten by audiences. Whether it be because a more popular movie was released at the same time or the movie simply didn’t catch on with an audience in the its initial run. We’ll discuss what we love about the movie or perhaps don’t love about it and decide whether the movie is worth a revisit.℗ & © 2024 Forgotten Cinema Art

  • Mortal Kombat (1995)
    Nov 20 2019

Special guest and YouTuber Russ Lyman join Mike Butler and (reluctantly) Mike Field to the NetherRealm to discuss the 1995 EarthRealm film, Mortal Kombat, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. Based on one of the most popular video game franchises of all time.

In a world replete with terrible video game movies, Mortal Kombat is...one of them. Listen as both Butler and Russ defend its so-bad-its-good parts against Field's hatred of all things this movie. They'll discuss the merits of overacting in a film such as this, the terrible effects, and how the fight sequences could have been improved. Butler will defend the fantastic set pieces and his love of the Goro animatronic, but lament the poor lighting. Field will hate it all. For there is only one thing that all three can agree on...that theme song still frickin' slaps!

So grab your quarters and joystick, please notice the special moves list on front and rear of the auditorium, and settle down for MORTAL KOMBAT!!!! I mean....Forgotten Cinema.

And be sure to check out, like and subscribe to all of Russ Lyman's awesome videos on YouTube, and catch him on his social media platforms as well!

  • The Two Jakes
    Nov 27 2019

"Forget it Mike, its Forgotten Cinema."

That's right, you guessed it! That cleverly edited famous film quote can only mean that this episode is going to focus on the Jack Nicholson film where he plays Jake Gittes. No, not that Jack Nicholson film where he plays Jake Gittes, the other one. Never heard of it? Well I guess you came to the right place!

The Mikes discuss the Jack Nicholson directed, Jack Nicholson vehicle, The Two Jakes; the sequel to the cinema classic, Chinatown, released in 1990.

Listen as Mike Field and Mike Butler attempt to figure out why Nicholson plays Jake as a completely different character type. The Mikes also contemplate how splitting his concentration between acting and directing might have caused Nicholson to make some questionable style choices and if the film would have been better off without relying so much on connecting to Chinatown.

So grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits at the front and rear of the auditorium, and settle down for Forgotten Cinema.
