In this chapter we hear Nick describe Gatsby's personal history, free of all the fluff and glamor. He has more humble beginnings than we thought as a poor North Dakota kid named James Gatz and a college dropout. Gatsby meets his mentor Dan Cody, and just as he is left unsatisfied at gaining any of Cody's wealth, he is also left unsatisfied with Daisy, as he is realizing things won't be as easy as they were five years before.
