In Deuteronomy 15-18, God's heart for the people to give generously so that there are not poor among them is shown. Next, the process for a servant to become part of a family is described, and then we're told the guidelines for a king of Israel. In the New Testament, Paul embraces the idea that he is a bondservant for Christ, and in Philippians, he writes that Jesus--though He was king--laid down His rights to serve us. It's this example that we have to embrace. Whatever life brings, we can follow the One who first served us.

We may not know exactly what God is doing in our times of difficulty, but in Deuteronomy 8 we learn that God sometimes tests His people to give them an opportunity to prove the purity of their hearts before Him. Today we're looking at Deuteronomy chapters two through four. In this book of the Bible, Moses is recounting the history of the Nation of Israel and pointing them to faithfulness and obedience in the Promised Land that they're about to cross into without him.

Moses asks for something for himself, and God says no, but promises to give the blessing to Joshua instead. Moses continues in faithfulness... can we follow in his example?

Today's Scripture is Numbers 35 through 36, and Deuteronomy 1. The book of Deuteronomy is one of my favorite books in the entire Bible! There are many verses I meditate on that reveal the heart of God. We'll see how much he desires to bless the Israelites and their children. There'll be much to say about parenting, but interestingly, it was one of these verses in Numbers that provided one of the most impactful times I've ever had in The Word.

It's one of my favorite things to do when studying The Bible, to look to the New Testament and see what is revealed about Old Testament characters and situations. Today, as we're provided an Old Testament overview of the wilderness wanderings, we'll look to Paul's writings to learn that "these things were written for our instruction."
