 Per troppo tempo George Gershwin è stato considerato un compositore minore del ventesimo secolo: oggetto degli equivoci e dei pregiudizi più diversi - scrive canzoni quindi non sa comporre musica classica, non ha il senso della forma, non sa orchestrare ecc. -, solo in tempi recenti la sua figura si è conquistata il posto di primo piano che merita, grazie alla varietà della sua produzione e all’altissima qualità dell’ispirazione. In un’epoca come la nostra che apprezza il meticciato musicale, Gershwin ci appare come un geniale precursore, il maestro che ha saputo fondere linguaggi diversi, in cui il jazz e Puccini, il blues e Rachmaninov, la canzone e la musica ebraica si fondono in uno stile profondamente statunitense. In questo, l’influenza di Gershwin è stata più ampia e profonda di quanto si crede: sul jazz (l’armonia, in particolare), sul musical di Broadway, su Leonard Bernstein, sull’opera (Peter Grimes di Britten), sul cinema. Oggi la sua eredità è più viva e feconda che mai e per questo merita di essere ripercorsa nei suoi tanti aspetti.
