Sam Sanderson is the General Manager of the Construction Association Of PEI, whose mission is to foster, promote, and advance the interests and efficiency of the construction industry on PEI, acting on behalf of and for its members.

Sam and the Construction Association of PEI are involved in various exciting projects, from building tiny homes in their own training centre to dealing with net zero homes and housing, and there are efforts to mirror their programs in other parts of the country, like Nova Scotia and Calgary.

A few days before recording this episode, the Association announced a new plan to recruit construction workers to PEI internationally.

Sam is passionate about the industry and what they are doing.

From my perspective, I am hoping to take this opportunity to get a read from Sam of where things are going in the industry. What types of projects we can expect to see more of in the coming years and generally try to gather information that I can share with my clients and the listeners of this podcast.

    https://www.indigo.ca/en-ca/time-flies-a-history-of-prince-edward-island-from-the-air/9781988692647.html

Joshua MacFadyen is the ACLC Teaching and Research Team and Canada Research Chair in Geospatial Humanities in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Prince Edward Island and is also an Affiliate Global Futures Scholar at Arizona State University.

I just received Joshua’s new book, Time Flies: A History of Prince Edward Island from the Air in the mail last week and I am finding it fascinating. It goes through the history of PEI using old and new aerial photographs. This book approaches PEI from a multi-generational timeline perspective. For example, it talks about the roads, when they were built and why. It goes through the major long-term trends and changes in our primary industries like farming and fisheries, rural communities and infrastructure, urban development and coastal change. It goes through big population booms and busts, speculative investing in fox farming, the introduction of the trans-Canada highway, the banning of the automobile and so much more.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of why PEI is the way it is.

On a personal level I have known Josh for quite a while through his sister Kathleen who is married to John MacPhee, the singer in my band Paper Lions. We used to visit Josh and Colleen and their four kids when we were performing in Kitchener Waterloo, Ontario. That time was all about fun, music, family, but this is my first time getting to dive into Joshua’s work as a scholar and apply it to my understanding of PEI and how that might apply to homeowners, REALTORS®, and all residents or visitors to this unique part of the earth.

In this episode of Chattel Fixtures PEI Real Estate Podcast, we discuss the process of preparing land for building on PEI. Whether you are interested in buying land to build on or have land that you are considering selling or developing, there is something in this episode for you. This episode offers a lot of helpful information about the process of getting quotes on PEI, building driveways, installing septic systems, perc tests, protecting embankments from erosions and much more. I hope you enjoy this down-to-earth discussion with Mike Annear.

Michael Annear is a partner in Kings County Construction with his father Harry which makes it a third-generation business.

Kings County Construction offers a range of services including Commercial Sitework, Demolition, Septic Systems, Sod, Land Preparation, Brickwork, Shore Protection, & Outdoor Spaces. They also do land development - including a fully serviced subdivision in Montague. They are located in Montague - or technically Brudenell, which is part of Three Rivers.

Mike started working in the business right after graduating from university. He works continually on the safety and certification requirements to keep the business and its employees current. He and his wife Deborah have four children. He is also a member of the Rotary in Montague and used to be heavily involved in soccer in the area.

I, and many people who grew up down east know Mike through his hockey coaching and refereeing. I had Mike as my ‘Peewee A’ coach and I had the benefit of participating in the Goodwill Games - an exchange between the Montague Norseman and the Mount Hamilton Blues.

On this episode of Chattel Fixtures PEI Real Estate Podcast, we have PEI’s most prominent developer, Tim Banks. Tim and his affiliated companies are currently in the process of building hundreds of homes for the PEI housing supply.

In addition to Tim’s many business and development achievements, one of the things I admire about Tim is his willingness to open himself up to criticism by engaging in conversation on essential topics on PEI, with a particular emphasis on housing.

One of the big ironies is that Tim often gets a lot of pushback from affordable housing advocates. Yet, Tim may, arguably, be the person doing the most on PEI to fix the housing crisis by building up the supply side - including hundreds of affordable units.

In this episode, we will discuss the importance of developing the supply side, what gets things built, unintended consequences of certain well-meaning government interventions, how to maintain and build vitality in our communities on PEI, and any other topic we veer into.

This is a very special episode of the Chattel Fixture PEI Real Estate Podcast.

When I found out that Kelly Lantz was joining forces with Kris Fournier and Catherine Fournier and the Kris Fournier/We Know PEI team at RE/MAX Charlottetown, I felt this surge of excitement. I was inspired, and excited, to see these forces combine and to be able to watch it so closely with my daily interactions with Catherine and Kris.

But beyond my personal excitement, it is surely one of the big moves of 2023 in the PEI real estate business. Your average Islander may not know what a big deal this is in the real estate world, but within this community, it is huge knowing that some of the biggest players in the industry are joining forces. I think the question on many other REALTORs' minds is - what happens next? What are the combined forces of the Kris Fournier team and Kelly Lantz going to do to change the real estate landscape on PEI?

What if you could get two REALTORs for the price of one?

When I noticed Alicia and Cecilia were co-listing a property. I thought I’d like to learn what that is all about and share those learnings with you, the listener.

Alicia Hegarty, who was in my pre-licensing course, is a REALTOR® with the Anthony Delodder team at Royal LePage. Prior to her moving into this line of work she had years of experience working with contractors as she and her husband invested in multiple homes. She spent 10 years working in family service which lends itself very well to helping people in the midst of one of the most important financial and life decisions they will ever experience - the purchase or sale of a house.

Cecilia Williams is a REALTOR® with Northern Light Realty. She moved to the Island from Ontario in late 2015, where she worked in hospitality and agriculture. She has an honours degree in Bio-Resource Management from the University of Guelph and currently lives in Charlottetown with her six-year-old daughter. She sits on the Board of Directors as Director of Communication and Secretary for Fusion Charlottetown, a local nonprofit. She has been in the business for the last four and a half years and brings experience working with many sellers and buyers. She has her own YouTube channel and has one of the top 10 REALTOR Instagram accounts on PEI, which you can find by searching PEI Pro Realtor or following the link in the description.
