Sam Sanderson is the General Manager of the Construction Association Of PEI, whose mission is to foster, promote, and advance the interests and efficiency of the construction industry on PEI, acting on behalf of and for its members.

Sam and the Construction Association of PEI are involved in various exciting projects, from building tiny homes in their own training centre to dealing with net zero homes and housing, and there are efforts to mirror their programs in other parts of the country, like Nova Scotia and Calgary.

A few days before recording this episode, the Association announced a new plan to recruit construction workers to PEI internationally.

Sam is passionate about the industry and what they are doing.

From my perspective, I am hoping to take this opportunity to get a read from Sam of where things are going in the industry. What types of projects we can expect to see more of in the coming years and generally try to gather information that I can share with my clients and the listeners of this podcast.

In this episode, we speak with Josh MacPherson of Maple Arc Contracting, which he co-owns with his business partner Gareth Povey.

Josh and Gareth started working together in January of 2021. They pride themselves in honesty, dedication, and integrity in their workmanship and communication through their projects with their clients.

They offer new construction, renovation, decks and fences and various commercial and personal projects.

They are active on social media, post updates about their various projects and have released more polished videos highlighting their approach to business and projects.

In this conversation, Josh and I discuss what he has learned since starting a new construction company. What advice he has for people who want to build or renovate and talk about being a builder on PEI.

Joshua MacFadyen is the ACLC Teaching and Research Team and Canada Research Chair in Geospatial Humanities in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Prince Edward Island and is also an Affiliate Global Futures Scholar at Arizona State University.

I just received Joshua’s new book, Time Flies: A History of Prince Edward Island from the Air in the mail last week and I am finding it fascinating. It goes through the history of PEI using old and new aerial photographs. This book approaches PEI from a multi-generational timeline perspective. For example, it talks about the roads, when they were built and why. It goes through the major long-term trends and changes in our primary industries like farming and fisheries, rural communities and infrastructure, urban development and coastal change. It goes through big population booms and busts, speculative investing in fox farming, the introduction of the trans-Canada highway, the banning of the automobile and so much more.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of why PEI is the way it is.

On a personal level I have known Josh for quite a while through his sister Kathleen who is married to John MacPhee, the singer in my band Paper Lions. We used to visit Josh and Colleen and their four kids when we were performing in Kitchener Waterloo, Ontario. That time was all about fun, music, family, but this is my first time getting to dive into Joshua’s work as a scholar and apply it to my understanding of PEI and how that might apply to homeowners, REALTORS®, and all residents or visitors to this unique part of the earth.
