Robert H. Mayer is the award-winning author of When the Children Marched: The Birmingham Civil Rights Movement and the editor of The Civil Rights Act of 1964. As a teacher, Mayer’s passion continues to be making history relevant and accessible to young people. His time spent in Jackson, Canton, and McComb, Mississippi, as well as meeting scholars and activists integral to the civil rights movement, fueled the desire to write In the Name of Emmett Till. He lives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with his wife Jan, where he writes, teaches, and tutors youth in a local middle school.

The 1955 murder of Emmett Till in Mississippi is widely remembered as one of the most horrible lynching's in American history. African American children old enough that year to be aware personally felt the terror of Till’s murder. These children, however, would rise up against the culture that made Till’s death possible. Over the next decade, from the violent Woolworth’s lunch-counter sit-ins in Jackson to the school walkouts of McComb, the young people of Mississippi picketed, boycotted, organized, spoke out, and marched, determined to reveal the vulnerability of black bodies and the ugly nature of the world they lived in. These children changed that world.

Emmett Till Antilynching Act is a United States landmark federal law which makes lynching a federal hate crime and signed into law on March 29, 2022, by President Joe Biden. The bill was named after 14-year-old Emmett Till, who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955, sparking national and international outrage.

NFL Super Bowl Champion, Businessman, Actor

This episode, I Get to Chat with Fellow Washingtonian, NFL Super Bowl Champion Vernon Davis!!

In the 2011–12 NFL playoffs with the 49ers, Davis caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Alex Smith against the New Orleans Saints, referred to as "The Catch III". In 2015, he was traded to the Denver Broncos, where he won Super Bowl 50 with the team over the Carolina Panthers. Davis then signed with the Washington Redskins in 2016, where he played until his retirement following the 2019 season.

Davis has become an entertainment personality since retiring from the NFL after the 2019 season, which includes competing on Dancing With the Stars in season 29. Among his recent acting credits are the Morgan Freeman-led The Ritual Killer and the Jon Heder comedy Plan B.

In 2023, Two-time pro bowler and Super Bowl champion Vernon Davis, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, and Washington Commanders, is also a star player as a member of the “Union” ensemble cast. Filmed a the Set in the heart of Northeast Washington, “Union” at the iconic Union District Oyster Bar. It is one of the first sitcoms about such a location that is filmed in an actual, operating bar.

Match Point centers on Max (Davis) and Anthony (Bolden), two former tennis stars who co-host a new podcast together. The series follows their behind-the-scenes efforts to launch the podcast alongside a high-strung producer (Ashley Haas) and a ratings-obsessed talent booker (Rob Gordon), all while dealing with pushy executives and a dysfunctional crew.

Viola Bradford started working at The Southern Courier when she was 14. On July 26, she will celebrate the newspaper's 60th anniversary with the culmination of a years-long effort to put a marker at the newspaper's former office on Commerce Street.

A group of Harvard University journalism students formed The Southern Courier in 1965 to document the Civil Rights Movement. The newspaper covered Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi and worked to recruit people from the area to report.

Bradford's work with the Courier led her to a career in journalism. She earned five degrees, including a doctorate from Howard University. She taught journalism at Alabama State University for about five years. The Southern Courier offered important coverage from 1965 to 1968.

“The Southern Courier didn’t just report the news—it disrupted the silence,” said Hardy. “It dared to tell the truth about the South from the people living it. At Alabama Values, we carry that same spirit. We’re a grassroots communications organization, using narrative to tell the stories others try to bury. Honoring the Courier is personal—it reminds us that truth-telling has always been a tool of resistance.”

The Southern Courier photo archives—over 10,000 images, including iconic photos of Dr. King—were donated by Peppler to the Alabama Department of Archives and History. The complete newspaper collection is housed at Tuskegee University.

Selma Jubilee March 5th-8th,2026

Faya Ora Rose Touré (s a civil rights activist, civil rights attorney, and education activist based in Selma, Dallas County. Previously known under the name “Rose Sanders,” she changed her name in 2002, considering it her enslaved name; she took the name “Touré” in honor of Guinea’s first president, Ahmed Sékou Touré. Touré became Alabama’s first Black woman judge in 1973. She has been a polarizing figure in Selma, with some news outlets portraying her as a heroic civil rights leader who has greatly improved the lives of Black people in Alabama, while other media sources consider her a troublemaker and agitator.

Born Rose M. Gaines on May 20, 1945, in Salisbury, North Carolina, to Damon A. Gaines, a minister, and Ora Lee Gaines; she was one of six children. She graduated summa cum laude from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1966. In 1969, she graduated from Harvard Law School, where she won the Herbert Smith Fellowship. In 1970, she married Henry “Hank” Sanders, who also graduated from Harvard Law School;

In 1991, Touré and Marie Foster created the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute in Selma. Located adjacent to the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the museum opened to the public in 1993. This museum chronicles the civil rights struggle in Alabama and honors the heroes who made great personal sacrifices so that Black citizens could gain the right to vote and strive toward equality. It features exhibits dedicated to Selma’s civil rights history, Reconstruction, woman suffrage, Pres. Barack Obama, Jesse Jackson, Jim Clark (the notorious sheriff known for his role in Bloody Sunday), and the mass incarceration of Black Americans.

This annual event in Selma, Alabama, commemorates "Bloody Sunday," which occurred March 7, 1965 when a group of about 525 African-American demonstrators gathered at Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church to demand the right to vote. They walked six blocks to Broad Street and across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where they were met by more than 50 state troopers and a few dozen possemen on horseback. When the demonstrators refused to turn back, they were brutally beaten. At least 17 were hospitalized,

FYI: Activist Jimmie Lee Jackson murder on February 26th 1965 sparked the March across the Edmund Pettis Bridge.

There were THREE Marches across The Bridge BECAUSE the First on March on March 7, 1965, resulted in Violence against the Marchers; The Second March on Tuesday, March 9, 1965. Martin Luther King led the March & prayed at the beginning of the Bridge. The last March was held March 17 with permits & saftey, The Marchers crossed the Bridge.

Senator Henry “Hank” Sanders is the second of 13 children born to Ola Mae and Sam Sanders of Baldwin County, Alabama. He challenged the twin obstacles of poverty and racism to: graduate from Douglasville High School, Talladega College, and Harvard Law School; establish a law practice; and serve as the first African American State Senator from the Alabama Black Belt. He is married to Faya Ora Rose Touré, formerly Rose M. Sanders, and they have three children by birth, four by foster relationship, and many by heart.

In 1971, Sanders began what became Chestnut, Sanders, Sanders, Pettaway and Campbell, LLC. At one time, it was the largest Black law firm in Alabama and one of the ten largest in the country. His law practice is one of service: helping poor and Black people save their lands, protecting people’s constitutional rights, challenging corporate abuse, and helping build strong governments to serve all people. He served as one of three lead counsel in the nationally known $1.2 billion Black Farmers Discrimination Litigation.

As a community person, Sanders has helped found and build many organizations and institutions, including the following: Alabama New South Coalition, where he currently is President Emeritus; 21st Century Youth Leadership Movement; Alabama Lawyers Association; Black Belt Human Resources Center; McRae Learning Center; the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute; the Slavery and Civil War Museum; C.A.R.E. (Coalition of Alabamians Reforming Education); the Selma Collaborative; the Bridge Crossing Jubilee; WBMZ-105.3 FM Radio Station; and more.

Dante Q. Allen was appointed by Governor Newsom to his new role of Deputy Director of the California Department of Rehabilitation Services on April 18, 2025 and sworn in by Director Kim Rutledge on May 5, 2025 Congratulations Danté!

The U.S. Senate approved the nomination of Danté Quintin Allen to lead the U.S. Department of Education’s Rehabilitative Services Administration (RSA). Until his confirmation, Allen had been serving as executive director for CalABLE, California’s ABLE Act savings and investment program for people with disabilities. Under his five-year leadership, CalABLE was the fastest growing ABLE Act program in the country. Prior to leading CalABLE, Allen was a communications leader for organizations including Kaiser Permanente and the California Department of Public Health’s Office of Health Equity. A fulltime wheelchair user, Allen is a well-known advocate for disability rights and equity. Upon his confirmation, Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona remarked, “I look forward to working together with Mr. Allen to provide individuals with disabilities and all students with equitable access to the education and training they need to find good-paying jobs; achieve economic security; and lead healthy, independent lives.”
